Digital camera reviews of Hauppauge 1120CN WinTV-HVR-950 Hybrid Video Recorder

Digital camera Review: Cheap but a lot of work - Audio Sync fixed!
Summary: 3 Stars

So this HVR-950 is a CPU-intenvise product. Huge AV sync issue. This can be fixed by downloading Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup utility (even in Vista) and changing the MPEG-2 decoder to InterVideo. Good luck!

Digital camera Review: Consumes a fair bit of processing power.
Summary: 4 Stars

This product installed very easily.

The tuner also includes a dongle that allows you to input video, S-video and audio through the tuner. In addition to this, Hauppauge provides a small portable antenna that will bring in any over air digital signals but I have yet to see it work.

The picture is so-so but I have to remember that my screen resolution is much higher than the resolution of a TV signal. Therefore any fuzz you get is quite obvious on your screen.

The additional audio and video line in is handy to use with a cable box since the coax input will not accept cable or satellite signals, according to the specifications.

This item does see to generate a bit of heat when in use so I would make sure that it is not covered by anything.

I have a core-duo 2.2ghz processor with 4gb of ram and when I open the program that came with it, my processor immediately jumps up to 33%. Perhaps a TV card with on board processing would have been better.

Overall, this has been a fine product and I like the ability to use it on my desktop and laptop.

Digital camera Review: Cool device for cable channels, struck out with HD
Summary: 3 Stars

Bought this item yesterday and am pretty impressed. I tried to use the small HD antenna that came with it but I was only able to grab 5 UHF channels (mostly static and in spanish) and two HD channels (one in spanish). Now maybe if I get a better antenna I will have better results but no such luck with the one included. I live about 40 miles out of NYC so I thought I would have more luck. So I decided to run my cable antenna through it instead. Now I get about 80 basic cable (no HBO for example) channels playing on my computer. The display is pretty good, a little grainy but thats OK. You can either view and record with provided software or you can just use Microsoft Media Center (I have Windows Vista). I like the DVR on Media Center much better than the provided software. So now the cool thing is I can burn shows onto DVD or transfer them to a portable video player. For $70 bucks it's very cool. I might step up and buy a better HD antenna to see if I have any better luck.

Digital camera Review: Crash
Summary: 1 Stars

The WinTV-HVR-950 crashes every time I use it. I mean that literally. If I use it for any time at all, I usually end up having to restart the application several times.

I'll have to buy another stick when we switch from analog to digital, and I won't even bother looking at anything from Hauppauge.

Digital camera Review: Created problems with Windows Media Player
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought two of these for our laptops. After installing the WinTV-HVR-950, the driver, and the Hauppauge application software, we now have problems playing any mpg's (other than those created by the Hauppauge TV software) using Windows Media Player. Now, only the mpg's created by the Hauppauge TV software will play correctly...everything else sounds like Mickey Mouse on steroids at high speed, and the video jumps & stalls. Oddly enough, all the mpg's will play using another mpg player such as VLC Media Player or even CyberLink PowerDVD, but nothing now plays correctly using Windows Media Player except as noted above. We actually like the Hauppauge device & TV software, but cannot understand what it did to Windows Media Player after we installed the WinTV-HVR-950. If anybody knows a fix for this, we would appreciate it.
