Digital camera reviews of Hauppauge 1120CN WinTV-HVR-950 Hybrid Video RecorderDigital camera Review: Device works ok -software could be better Summary: 3 Stars
Device installed without a problem. Software is mediocre. Would be nice to
if 16 or so channels were shown at once so you can see what a number of channels had on. I had a PCI/TV card years ago that did this. A numeric
keypad would help to jump to a channel easier instead of right clicking then scrolling down a list to select one. Besides these missing goodies once you are on a channel the device works well.
Digital camera Review: Didn't quite meet my expectations Summary: 3 Stars
All I wanted was a ATSC tuner to use with Windows Media Center 2005. I am using two of them, actually. I'm not using the software, nor have I tried the antenna that came with it.
It does an okay job, but I think the ATSC tuner is not picking up the signal very well on some local stations. I'm using an antenna in my attic that splits between this and my TV. My TV picks up the ATSC station just fine (so its not an antenna/signal strength issue), but I can't get a reliable signal when I tune to the same station using this device.
Also Media Center can't display the signal stregth for some reason. For every ATSC station that it finds it shows zero signal strength. My TV tuner reports mid 80% range on most.
I've not even tried the NTSC tuner abiltiy so I can't comment on that.
Bottom line with regard to the ATSC ability, I think it does okay, but not great.
Digital camera Review: Does what it says Summary: 3 Stars
I've had this tuner for a month now and have time to play with it. I also have a 1600 to compare it. Overall, I am impressed by the size and portability of this tuner. When it has a signal, HD looks great. SD looks like SD. I first used the enclosed antenna which only picked up one local signal. I then used my DB4 with preamp to pull in 6 more. Even with the DB4 my CBS reception, which is 99% on the 1600, it only managed to pull 70% with the 950. This weekend, I took my laptop to Los Angeles and was able to pull in many more channels. But with the enclosed antenna it was jerky reception; I'm sure with an external antenna it would have been fine. This probably isn't the best unit for my area, but in an urban setting it would work just fine. My only complaints are:
- No stereo output when using cable
- Tuner strength is about much weaker than my 1600
- no QAM
Digital camera Review: Don't buy anything with WinTV Summary: 1 Stars
The box says that I need a CD drive for software installation. I have lots of them but they are on a network, not in the machine I want to install this on. Even though I have Hauppauge's hardware plugged into my machine, the system will not validate and allow the software to install. What a crock! Why should anyone sell a product that won't allow the software to install even when the proprietary hardware is plugged into the machine? Hauppauge tech support says that is how it is. Too bad.
I am returning this piece of junk.
Digital camera Review: EXCELENT DEVICE Summary: 5 Stars
With this device you'll have what you need. Good Picture, nice stability. The small size is a plus.
