Digital camera reviews of Hauppauge 1145 MyTV HD TV Stick for MacDigital camera Review: Low quality, charged a mint for "restocking fee". Summary: 2 Stars
The thing worked fine for me, although the quality was much less than i expected. It was okay if you are simply watching TV on your laptop in a small window, but I actually recorded the video to my hard-drive and burned them to a DVD, and although it played in the DVD player, the quality was terrible. This is an okay item if you only plan to watch TV on your computer.
What I AM mad about is the ridiculous $17 "restocking fee" Amazon charged me! I mean, this TV stick is the size of a large thumb drive, and I simply and neatly put it back in the box and mailed it back, so I find this charge a little ridiculous, and will probably never buy from Amazon again if I get charged like this to send something back.
Digital camera Review: More than just a TV Tuner Summary: 5 Stars
Not only does this let me watch TV on my mac, but it also lets me hook up a composite input, so I can play old school video games through my computer monitor! There's a yellow-white-red to mini USB dongle that comes with the TV Tuner that's pretty awesome. It does more than my old PCI-card tuner, plus it's portable.
And since it's windows AND mac compatible, it's even more awesome. This was the best deal i could find for something like that.
The program that comes with it (meant for Macs) does a pretty good job. interface could be a little more fluid, but it covers all the bases. Those with windows will probably be satisfied using Windows Media Center.
Digital camera Review: Nifty Summary: 4 Stars
It's working well on my MacBook. HD programming looks very nice. Surprisingly crisp. Processor usage a bit high. But otherwise a solid 4 1/2 stars. The Lite version of the software is good enough for me; it records, changes channels, etc. Software looks and handles great and is user friendly. Really handy for watching TV and surfing the net. A nifty useful gadget.
Digital camera Review: Not a bad value Summary: 3 Stars
I originally purchased this product for use with my MacBook Pro when I travel. Overall, I have found that this product works reasonably well. Setup was relatively quick and simple. The only catch is that you have to repeat setup every time you change locations. There is no method in EyeTV to quickly rescan the channels. The supplied antenna works shockingly well for an omnidirectional antenna. Video quality in EyeTV is acceptable, but I often find there are sound issues. There seems to be a lot of clipping in the audio. I have seen some rumors that this may be mitigated (but definitely not fixed) in a later release, but I can simply not bring myself to pay for an upgrade to the full version of EyeTV. I was also disappointed to learn that there is no clear-QAM support with this version of the product. If you are looking for an inexpensive tuner to give you basic functionality, this product may suit your needs.
Digital camera Review: One for both platforms Summary: 5 Stars
This USB TV Tuner works as it was described by the site. I chose this particular item because it works with both my Vista based PC and my Mac OSX Macbook. As promised, it is functional and easy to set up on both machines. The Mac version of the software seems more robust than the PC version - but I actually prefer the Windows Media Center to the tv software provided.
In NYC, using the included antenna and placing it by the window, I was able to get 21 channels; however, some channels had weak signals at times. I hooked the tuner up to a Terk HDTVi antenna and the weak signal issue went away - I even found even a few more stations. That said, the small compact antenna that came with the tuner will still prove invaluable when I travel with the macbook - it may help pass time when delayed in airports and I am tired of reading.
In short, if you need a tuner that is interchangeable between the Mac and PC, this is it! Others on the market are less versatile or much more expensive.
