Digital camera reviews of Hauppauge 1145 MyTV HD TV Stick for MacDigital camera Review: Works as advertised Summary: 5 Stars
After being disappointed with several other USB TV tuners I finally found one that works as advertised.
Digital camera Review: Works great with Macs and PCs after software updates Summary: 5 Stars
This device worked beautifully right out of the box on my wife's Mac Mini (Snow Leopard) but the PC software for the Windows XP Pro SP3 side was pretty hideous. I went to the WinTV site and downloaded the free WinTV v.7 upgrade, installed it, and the results were amazing. The interface is much nicer and, more importantly, the TV picture streams properly now rather than looking like a slide show.
Setup on the Windows side was more difficult, partially because in order to install the WinTV upgrade I had to find, download, and install a newer version of Microsoft's .net framework (WinTV needs at least version 2.0 to work, I found v.3.5 and installed it). The Elgato software for the Mac side installed without a hitch, and an update was automatically detected.
The included antenna doesn't work for us, we're too far out in farm country to receive any signals, but I just set both sides up for analog cable and everything went smoothly.
Digital camera Review: Works great, but runs warm Summary: 4 Stars
What a nifty little device. When TV went digital my portable TV went out the window. This, and my laptop make a terrific replacement.
I love the picture, I love the sound and I love the recording feature. Like all Digital TVs it does lose sync if the antenna is moved, but that is a minor inconvenience, as I usually sit in one place to watch.
Easy to install, easy to use, and sensitive enough to work in some pretty remote areas.
Only one problem: It does tend to run hot. Not so hot that you wold get a burn touching it, but hot enough to worry that components inside might reach their threshold. I tried putting a large metal washer on the COAX connector, and it helped to sink the heat, but this part of the design might be looked at by the manufacturer. I also tried wrapping it in a damp washcloth - and that really helped, but looked stupid.
