Digital camera reviews of Hauppauge 1212 HD-PVR High Definition Personal Video Recorder

Digital camera Review: A satisfied customer
Summary: 5 Stars

I use my Hauppauge HD-PVR to record TV from my Comcast HD cable box. I record using the 9.0MB bit rate (out of 13MB) and the video, which I watch on a Sony 55 inch flat screen, is quite beautiful. I also have no complains about the audio, but I have a very basic audio set-up. Its very easy to burn recordings to DVD-R, but I find the editing software needs finer adjustment capabilities. In other words when you drop in an edit point, it's never exactly where you think it is. I've also discovered if you mess up the placement of an edit point, and you try to fix it, it sends the audio out of sinc.

I could not get the IR blaster to work at all.

The top of the recorder does get warm, but I've been using the machine constantly for a few weeks and so far no problems.

Sometimes when I change channels with my cable remote, their is a three second delay, during which time the tv screen displays "no signal".

It was easy to set up the HD-PVR near my TV. The USB connection to my computer was a different story. I ended up drilling a hole in the floor behind my computer desk, and another hole in the floor behind my TV stand. I bought a fifteen foot USB cable and ran it from my computer, down the hole, through my basement, and to the recorder.

Dispite the few gliches, I'm happy with my HD-PVR.

Digital camera Review: A steal at this price, great for grabbing HD video!
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm surprised to see a few dissatisfied reviewers. I, like other reviewers who love this device, am only using it to capture footage from video games consoles. I don't have much to add that hasn't been said elsewhere. I love that the device has AV and S-video inputs for older consoles, but I really got it for the HD component input. I play on the TV since like another reviewer said, there is a 2-3 second delay in the display in the capture software, but this works just fine as I keep a TV right near the PC. The software is easy to use, though I agree, you really want to keep the CD for this software! I don't think it can be downloaded if lost and it's value is close to that of the entire device. It works great in Windows 7 32-bit AND 64-bit, though you want the latest drivers. I've come to just rely and depend on this working so well every time that I have no worries about grabbing great audio/video. I've owned this for a little less than 2-years, it stays on all the time and hasn't been any trouble. This was well worth the money and I just couldn't be happier with it.

Digital camera Review: A very solid HD DVR
Summary: 5 Stars

This product was very easy to setup and worked just the way I needed it too. I was recording 720P game footage with ease. I was even able to use my netbook, however I wasn't able to playback Hi Def until I got it over to my desktop PC. The loop though prevents any latency at all while it records making it easy to see and watch what you were capturing which saves money on having to get a strong PC to play 1:1.

My only problem is I can't use my PC monitor since the HD DVR only supports Component outputs for HD. But its hardly a problem for most and i'm sure if I look I'll be able to find a cable to suit my needs.

Digital camera Review: A way to reencode from analog HD outputs
Summary: 5 Stars

There have been many times over the past few years that I wished I had the ability to permanently save high definition programs stored on my HD DVR. But thanks to Hollywood's piracy paranoia, many HD DVRs lack the ability to permanently archive stored HD programs.

The Hauppage offers a way around this limitation by making it possible to take the component video outputs from a DVR or HD tuner (satellite, cable, or OTA) and redigitize them. The resulting file can be viewed on a PC or can be burned to DVD in a format that is compatible with many Blu Ray players.

The good news is that this product works as advertised, with the included software installing quickly on my PC. Recording a program with this device is simple as can be, and the software for burning a Blu Ray compatible disk (in the AVC-HD format) is simple to use.

Highly recommended for anyone who needs the capability to permanently archive HD programs off a tuner or DVR that has component video outputs.
