Digital camera reviews of Incredible MXZ Pocket Saw - As Seen On TVDigital camera Review: Satisfied Skeptic Summary: 5 Stars
Like most MXZ owners, I originally saw the product on an annoying infomercial. While I would never purchase it via phone or mail order, I stumbled across the MXZ at a retail store and decided I could spare the $12. At the time I didn't have a particular use for the MXZ but thought it would be nice tool to have around in case I needed to cut through hard material. I have been very happy with purchase as the MXZ has turned out to be quite handy.
About a year after my purchase, I needed to cut heat-sinking vents through a relatively thick conical aluminum reflector. It turned out that the MXZ was perfect for the job. Basically, the tungsten carbide particles on the MXZ's blade are ideal for cutting through irregular shapes or extremely hard materials. Because as the tungsten carbide grains have an omni-directional cutting ability, the blade doesn't slide right to left or bounce along the surface -- unlike a hacksaw. Additionally, the stability of the cutting motion is improved by the relatively small particles.
Other than the relatively soft aluminum reflector, I have used the MXZ to cut wood and hardened steel. Clearly there are better tools to cut either, such as a wood saw or bolt cutters, but nothing is an all-around multi-purpose saw like this.
On my hardened steel cut test, I tried to cut through an inexpensive combination Master lock. It took about five minutes to cut half way through. Of course, bolt cutters would have been much faster but that isn't the point. The MXZ was convenient.
For the price, the MXZ is a good value. The solid construction is impressive at this price point. The handle is a relatively heavy cast metal while the blade is very stiff, as it needs to be. So far, none of the tungsten carbide has appeared to have chipped away from the underlying steel blade.
Overall, the MXZ is unique saw that is inexpensive, versatile and compact. It would make a great gift and so, I plan to purchase a few of these for stocking stuffers at Christmas time.
Pros
Compact
Cuts through a wide range materials
Solid construction
Low cost
Cons
Not the fastest cutting tool for every type of material
Digital camera Review: So Disappointed Summary: 1 Stars
The saw is a disappointment. I tried to cut through a nail sticking out of the floor and it just won't cut it. Also, the blade keeps sliding out of the handle as I'm sawing, even after tightening it. The saw is lightweight and bends easily.
Digital camera Review: The MXZ saw is a piece of junk Summary: 1 Stars
When I watched a demontration of this saw cutting through all different types of material like metal, glass and brick I was amazed and at such a great price. When I received it and tried to cut a small to medium sized branch I did not have the same success. It is like a butter knife more than a saw. After half an hour trying to cut this branch, I finally gave up. I must admit, I wish I had the saw they were showing on the TV advertisement. The one I have is definitely not it. This is a piece of junk. I only wish I could get my money back. Best I can tell, it won't cut through anything.
Digital camera Review: Upper body strength needed Summary: 3 Stars
This saw does cut thru tile. However it takes a lot of strenth and stamina. We used it for ceramic 4 inch wall tile. Each tile took 2-3 hours of sawing.
Digital camera Review: Works on plastic Summary: 3 Stars
I picked one of these up a long time ago. After owning it for several years, I can say this:
* It's great for cutting plastic. I've hacked my way through many a plastic thing with very little effort thanks to this tool.
* It is, in fact, capable of cutting aluminum and soft metals. Schedule some time to do it because you'll be there all day, but it works.
* This tool is awful for cutting wood. If you absolutely need a tool like this for cutting wood, purchase another blade. This blade is less effective on wood than metal. The saw blade on a generic multitool will do a better job.
