Digital camera reviews of Iomega Desktop Hard Drive 500 GB Hi-Speed USB 2.0 External Hard Drive - 33654Digital camera Review: Iomega dont fail. Summary: 5 Starsvery good finished and quality inside, (HDD is seagate) very fast to transfer files, iam happy with this external hard disk drive.
Digital camera Review: Not recognized by computer Summary: 1 StarsI had this product for about 6 months when it started making a continuous beep, like a busy signal. The blue power light was on and it sounds like the hard drive is spinning. The computer no longer recognized the hard drive.
Under warranty they will replace, but you lose your data and the warranty is just for one year.
I found many similar incidents for this Hard Drive on the Iomega User Community forum.
Digital camera Review: Gets hot quick! Summary: 4 StarsIt gets hot very quickly, but transferring is very easy. Just plug it into the USB. I heard that this HD dies out very quick, so I am always sure to click the power button on the HD when it gets hot. Most of the time, it is off ( I don't want to burn the HD out bc it has important information in it). It's a very good product for the price. But just be advised-- this is very important. YOU CANNOT TRANSFER A SINGLE FILE THAT IS >4 GIGS! I had to do this, and it took me several hours to figure out how to get a 4 gig file from one computer to the other. Most of you won't have this problem, but it is a warning.
Also, for me, it is very easily compatibility with mac and PC. I use it for both, and there's no problem. Just plug it in. Also, nothing gets "deleted" or reset if you are wondering. All my files are there.
Digital camera Review: Iomega Takes a Lickin' & keeps on Tickin' Summary: 5 StarsBought this unit from Amazon July 23,2008. No problems yet. Have stuffed it into my laptop computer bag and hauled it through the gauntlet of Airport security and the tender ministrations of the baggage handlers twice since then. It still works fine. Not at all noisy or hot as some have reported. Am thinking of getting another Iomega like this one Iomega Select Desktop Hard Drive - Hard drive - 1 TB - external - 3.5" - Hi-Speed USB - buffer: 8 MB - black and reformatting as NTFS to store my DV video. However, as with ALL electromechanical devices, they eventually wear out or may develop issues. My reccomendation is to buy 2. One to use and one to backup onto daily that then gets turned off & stored safely. Dont depend upon 1 drive in constant use for critical backup.
Digital camera Review: Heavy, slow and unreliable Summary: 1 StarsThere are dozens of positive reviews for this product, and dozens of negative reviews. It seems like this product works on some people, but doesn't on other people. I'd like to share my experience with you. I bought this product about six months ago. From the start I noticed that it was very heavy (four pounds), and very bulky. So, if you want to move your information around, keep looking. This one is meant to stay put. At first it worked fine. Although it was a bit slow. It would take almost ten minutes to store a 1GB file, but at least it worked. After a while, the drive started failing. It would only read some of the files, it corrupted most of the information and sometimes would not even read on the different computers I have. After a while I decided that all my information was lost but maybe I could format it and get it to work like from the factory. I couldn't do it. Windows couldn't format, Linux wouldn't format and Mac would not format either. I destroyed the partition using Windows XP tool, and when I tried to assign a new one the system is not able to recognize it.
And now, for the worst part. Yes, Hard drives fail. I looked at iomega's support page and couldn't find an answer. Getting technical support is almost impossible. And don't even get me started on trying to make your warranty valid. They will try to find any excuse not to take it back. So now, I'm stuck with a 500GB harddrive that wont work. I lost all my data and my money. If you like to gamble, then by all means get this harddrive. But, if it fails on you 6 months from now and you can't make your warranty valid, don't say you were not warned.
