Digital camera reviews of Iomega eGo USB 2.0 320 GB Rugged Portable Hard Drive (Ruby Red)

Digital camera Review: 320GB doesn't really mean 320GB
Summary: 4 Stars

Nice compact size (and ruby red color), easy hookup, no power cord needed. Unfortunately you get significantly less than 320GB, more like 280GB. All due to the formatting process, no doubt. Otherwise, satisfactory.

Digital camera Review: A fantastic Product
Summary: 5 Stars

I recently purchased the Iomega eGo Rugged Portable Hard Drive 320GB. I have never used a portable hard drive before so I have nothing to compare it to, but it seemed to backup all the files on my computer very quickly. If you are someone who cares about style you will be very happy with the appearance. Also, if anyone is not sure whether this is for Macs or PC, they should know that it is compatible with both.

Digital camera Review: Amazon misprints Ruby Red as "rugged" when it's not...
Summary: 3 Stars

Something I've noticed after watching the Popular Mechanics drop test video in which the eGo camo survives a 15ft concrete-floot falll and yet the other Iomega drive, the "Iomega eGo Portable Drive", doesn't survive a 9.5 carpet-floor drop...

Well, I was attracted to the eGo after that video and thus searched for it here at Amazon via "Iomega eGo RUGGED".

My order read "Iomega eGo USB 2.0 320 GB Rugged Portable Hard Drive (Ruby Red)".

But, please note ,the above is a misnomer. What makes eGo devices "ruggedized" is the "Power Grip Band," which sells for an additional 15$ at Iomega. My eGo did not come with such a band... I'm not sure whether the "camo" color or brand comes with the band standard, but the ruby red certainly doesn't. (Actually, the Camo does come with the band as listed on its Amazon page as a part of its unique "box contents"... other colors do not list the Power Grip Band.)

The Ruby Red eGo brand is nonetheless supposed to be extra durable; it does have "Drop-Guard" technology, whereas other Iomega brands such as the Prestige are supposed to be less durable with only "Drop Shock" technology. The Iomega site advertizes the Prestige as "durable" and the whiskey flask looking portables, which includes both Camo and Ruby Red, as "super durable" -- with or without the power bands.

Anyhow, the power band is on the competition-winning HD portable that survives the drop tests in the Popular Mechanics video. But, again, this band is not included as a part of the "Iomega eGo USB 2.0 320 GB Rugged Portable Hard Drive (Ruby Red)" item.

Buyer beware...

Digital camera Review: BP gsec
Summary: 5 Stars

This nice red flask works quite well and fits in my jacket pocket. First I worried about the two-pronged USB cable that came with it, but I used the drive on 4 different computers (including 3 laptops, one of them is Dell from 2003) and never needed second USB port to power it. This is not a speed monster, but neither is any other portable drive. I'm completely satisfied with performance. I give 5 stars for look and feel/build quality/size and 4 for performance.

Digital camera Review: Beauty of this external drive is only skin-deep
Summary: 1 Stars

This is my third Iomega external drive - the first two ran like champs, and did trouble-free automatic backups with software that was easy to install and low-maintenance. Alas - they wouldn't support my new laptop,so I bought this model.
The backup software for this drive is hard to find on the Iomega site, hard to optimize, and a pain to use. The support material on the website is hard to navigate. (I wouldn't even have known the drive needed to be optimized for PCs if I hadn't read these reviews on amazon.com.)
I actually returned the first one of these I ordered because I couldn't get the backup software loaded and running per Iomega's instructions. I still can't get daily backups to run quickly and properly, and usually end up reverting to manual backups. What's the point??
User-friendly: NOT. I'll probably replace this drive soon with a different brand just because of the software issues, and give this one to someone who has time to fiddle with the nonsense. Iomega really dropped the ball on this one!
