Digital camera reviews of Iomega eGo USB 2.0 320 GB Rugged Portable Hard Drive (Ruby Red)Digital camera Review: Perfect Aspire One Companion and Beeping Solved Summary: 5 Stars
I just got my eGo a few moments ago. What a great deal, 320GB for under $100. I bought it for additional storage for my Acer Aspire One. I may end up buying a few more of these eGo's as they are compact and don't need a power source--just plugs into the Aspire's USB 2.0 port. As far as the split USB cable, it works just fine using only one plug/port on the Aspire, no need to sacrifice 2 ports just for the eGo. I also bought the 7 port USB hub from Cables To Go, that is recommended with this drive. The drive will beep and not show up as a drive on your computer if the hub isn't powered. Once it's powered, the problem goes away. Possibly the hub will work unpowered if you use both USB cables, but I haven't tested that yet.
Digital camera Review: Perfectly Satisfied Summary: 5 Stars
I'm very happy with the Iomega eGo. It works well (and looks good). Zero complaints.
Digital camera Review: Pocket friendly, handsome and functional. Summary: 5 Stars
All portable hard drives are not the same. Once one has whittled down the plethora of external drives on the market using capacity, weight and dimensions as parameters to a few suitable competitors, it is left to the equally important choices of color and shape.
The internals of the Iomega drive have been described in countless on-line reviews and in computer magazines: they do the job they were designed for and quietly too. As for the appearance of this unit, color is a hard choice - there are eight of them! Each to his own, but as you are reading this review you also found Ruby Red to be the most appealing. Factor in its ergonomic pocket friendliness and this is the winner. The quality of the exterior is high and the semi-matt finish does not retain finger marks, so it looks good on ones desk all day long. The unit needs two free USB ports to supply the required power and these should be adjacent to each other in order to use the included cable. If not, a hub or a longer Y-cable will be required.
This hard drive has a sturdy feel and a high quality finish. It is pocket shaped with no sharp edges or corners. This reviewer found no fault in the two months the unit has been in daily use.
Digital camera Review: Sleek, quiet, and oh-so-portable Summary: 5 Stars
Weighing in at 6 ounces and with dimensions just 3.5" by 5.5" x .75", this snazzy little portable hard drive is the perfect size to slip into a briefcase or store in a drawer. Its 320 GB of storage is about what you would expect in a portable drive. And who would have thought that eye-catching colored electronics would pop up in the workhorses of the computing world? I love it.
The disk runs smoothly, with only a whisper of sound, something I really appreciate since I have a relatively noisy Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 1 TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive WDH1U10000N hooked up to my desktop. For PC users, it is plug-and-use; Mac owners must reformat the drive using Disk Utility, a process described clearly in the manual. The eGo is powered by a dual (split) USB connector, so, if you are running on battery power, you can plug in both to give it enough power.
The manufacturer claims that this can be dropped four feet and survive intact, but there's no way I'm going to test that. Still, its aluminum case feels sturdy, giving me confidence that the eGo can withstand some bumping around. The tiny silicon feet (it lies flat, not on end as some do) prevent accidental sweeping off a desk or table. The three-year warranty suggests that Iomega has complete confidence in the integrity of its product.
With the purchase of this product, Iomega offers a "protection suite": six months of McAfee VirusScan Plus (Windows only), MozyHome Online Back-Up (with 2 GB storage free), EMC Retrospect Express (Mac and PC), and Iomega QuickProtect (both platforms). As a Mac user, I have little interest in any of the preceding since I use Time Machine for back-ups and since I don't want anyone storing my information online. Despite the fact that I don't want the software, I appreciate that Iomega has included it for others who may.
Use this for file backups or storage of memory-intensive media. If you need an external hard drive for a desk top, you'll probably want one with a larger capacity, but the eGo is perfect for laptop use, travel, and as a supplemental storage device.
