I was looking for compact speakers with a built-in amplifier to take the place of the poor quality little speakers on a 20" TV. The spoken voice was just not reproduced clearly with the TV speakers and it had become an increasing problem as I have gotten older. I wasn't looking for music quality speakers. These speakers are inexpensive, compact and match the gray cabinet if the TV. They are a big improvement over the TV speakers and I can hear what people are saying with the volume at a normal level. They take their power from a normal 120V outlet so there is no batteries to fool with. The TV connection is the 3.5 mm front jack meant for head phones. The speakers have their own volume control but are also controlled by the TV remote. I haven't tried them with music since that isn't what they were purchased for. These speakers are okay but I have paid less for better. The sound quality is fine, the volume just doesn't go high enough for me. That is my only complaint. I don't know enough about speakers to know if it is because there are just two speakers where I previously had three or what. See a lot of other reviews about buzzing sound - this is terrible. In addition, I'd like to mention that there's nothing fancy about sound quality - it's normal, which is below my expectation for the price (I'd expect quality to be noticeably above average). Buy $5-10 speakers on ebay and get similar result with no buzz.
I'll try to check if manufacturer will accept a return.
Digital camera Review: Awesome - but realize what they're for

I bought these speakers when I left for college, and they were the perfect size to fit on a desk, fill the room with music when I'm working out, etc. The sound quality is great, and its easy to set-up, and as important, disable: just plug them into and out of the headphone jack.
However, if you want to throw a loud party, get something bigger: After having them on full blast a few times, they started to get a static-sound at high volume (fine when lower though)
Still, I don't think there's anything better out there. I'd buy again.
