Digital camera Review: A Sweet Little System!

There is so much more that this system has. You can hook up an external source such as a CD-RW and record CD's digitally. You can mute the sound if you need to and tone down the bright blue backlight. The radio has 30 presets and you can program the system to play random CD tracks or a set program, 20 in all. There is also a clock and a sleep timer in this system.

In all, a sweet system with a really cool look. Someday, we will unpack our old 125 watts-per-channel component system, buy new speakers and a CD player. At that time, this system will go into another room. For now, we are extremely pleased with this bookshelf system.

Summary of JVC FS-SD5 Executive Microsystem

Power up the FS-SD5 and its striking glass top plate slides back to unveil controls for volume, source, CD, preset tuning, clock/timer, and JVC's Active Hyper Bass PRO circuit (bass boost, essentially). Press CD, and the top plate performs yet another contortion, raising itself on motorized hinges to reveal the CD itself. When a disc is set in place, the drawer returns to the closed position and playback begins.

The FS-SD5 sounds as elegant as it looks. Although each ported speaker enclosure contains just a single 3.2-inch full-range driver (made of dense olefin fiber), they produce a clear midrange, with particularly strong vocal and instrumental reproduction. The bass is surprisingly full for such small speakers, especially once Active Hyper Bass PRO has been engaged. The high-frequency response is good, but not quite as airy as we hear with speakers that have separate tweeters. Overall this system delivers a clean, warm sound that can easily fill a small- to medium-sized listening space.

Other noteworthy features include an optical digital output (for direct digital recording to minidisc or CD), stereo minijack input and output (for looping in an external source), electronic bass and treble controls, a dimmable florescent display, and a subwoofer output that lets you hook up a powered subwoofer to beef up the low end.

With a combination of great looks and fine sound, JVC's sleek little FS-SD5 not only electrifies any room, it also outclasses most of the competition. --Wayne Garcia

The speakers, however, may well be the heart of this machine. Housed within the Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) enclosures are 3.2-inch full-range hyper-neo-olefin cones and edgewise-wound four-layer voice coils. Olefin is one of the toughest fibers made, and a four-layer voice coil delivers considerable power to your speakers. Through their use of a bass-reflex design, the FS-SD5's speakers will produce much more bass than their diminutive size might suggest.

Other features include electronic bass/treble controls, JVC's Active Hyper-Bass Super PRO, MD/Auxiliary input and output, Compu Play, and a line-level subwoofer output, making this an extremely versatile desktop stereo.

The CD player is programmable (up to 20 tracks) and includes random/repeat play, while the digital tuner stores 30 FM and 15 AM stations and utilizes auto preset. Included in the package is a standing full-function remote control. A blue LCD screen illuminates all the FS-SD5's features.
