Digital camera reviews of JVC HA-FX300B In-Ear Headphones (Black)

Digital camera Review: Amazing, beautiful headphones
Summary: 5 Stars

I recently bought these, as an upgrade to JVC's excellent JVC HAFX33B Marshmallow In-Ear Stereo Headphones (Black). They are amazing to listen to!

The sound that comes from these things is truly astonishing. From the second you plug them in, you realize, "Man, these are something special."

One word that comes to mind when describing the sound is "deep". Music sounds very clear and whole. It's a real experience listening to the different dynamic levels and sounds in music that you miss with lesser headphones. The stereo aspect is just awesome. Sound alternates from left and right earpiece effortlessly, and it's just cool to listen to. Try listening to Virtual Barber Shop on youtube with them. You will be blown away.

The bass is amazing, of course. You can really feel it in those special songs where the bass is especially high. And they can really fade bass levels well, which is sweet to hear.

I like the way they fit in my ear, and the memory foam earpiece really seals out ambient noise. If you don't like the "earplug feel", they also come with different sized silicone earpieces.

Overall, these earbuds are an excellent investment. Buy them, listen to them, fall in love with them.

Digital camera Review: Decent sound quality, poor contruction and materials
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought these about 7-8 months ago and I use them daily to listen to audio books during my commute and music while at work so they have seen a lot of use. I never found the sound quality to be exceptional but decent enough to keep using. Unfortunately they have not held up as well as I feel they should have for the price. After 6 months the body came apart on one of the buds and had to be super glued back together but this was an easy fix and they still sounded the same.

The problem that now forces me to replace them is the wiring used. More specifically the shielding material that protects the wire is becoming brittle with prolonged contact to skin oil. About 2 months ago I started noticing that the cord was becoming a bit rigid and resistant to bending. Now the shielding has cracked in multiple places and the copper wire is exposed and will inevitably break along with the shielding. This is only happening on parts of the wire where it comes on contact with skin so I have to assume it's a reaction to skin oils. Perhaps this is by design to squeeze more dollars out of us, or maybe this is common but with all the technology at hand I would think they could use a wire shielding that can resist skin oils.

Bottom Line: Don't expect to be able to use these daily for more than 6 months before you will have to replace them. The included hard case is great though and now protects a new set of Skullcandy buds that sound as good if not better then the JVC's did.

Digital camera Review: Decent value, good sound
Summary: 4 Stars

Used with ipod touch... purchased from Amazon.com. This set comes with various sized silicon ear pieces so fit is no problem and cord construction appears durable... I didn't like them at first. Sound seemed very tinny with poor bass... even with ipod equalizer bass range cranked up. However, after 20 hours use and changing to larger earpieces, I found sound improved markedly. As of now, I am pleased with the sound and would recommend them.

Digital camera Review: Excellent Value
Summary: 5 Stars

Very good sound, very efficient, attractive and include a nice case as well.

I've had Ultimate Ears SuperFi 3's, Sennheiser cx300's and now these JVC's. These JVC's sound the best. I tried listening to everything from symphonic music, to solo piano, to alternative rock, and instrumental jazz with them and they sounded balanced and natural with nothing lacking and nothing artificially boosted.

I've never heard an ear bud that sounds like a real headset. There is always a certain amount of muddiness and lack of definition. The muddiness in minimal with these guys and they actually sound quite good. I'm very pleased with them.

Digital camera Review: Excellent, but maybe not worth the price
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought these headphones as an upgrade to my JVC HAFX33A Marshmallow In-Ear Stereo Headphones (Blue) which I was actually very happy with. I decided that since I used my headphones a lot I should probably upgrade them, and since I was happy with my previous JVC headphones, I decided to buy a higher end product from the same maker. These headphones are well reviewed on Consumer Reports, so I decided to give them a try. The sound quality is very good and they feel comfortable in my ear, slightly more comfortable than my previous pair. One complaint I have is with regard to the over the ear style. The headphones are designed so that the wire loops over the top of your ear, and although not particularly uncomfortable, I think I prefer the more traditional style of my previous headphones. Another important aspect is the sound quality of these headphones vs the Marshmallow model that I used previously (also made by JVC). I have compared them by listening to songs with one pair of headphones and then the other multiple times and although the sound does seem slightly better with this model, it is not significantly better. Unless you are a serious audiophile, you will probably not notice much of a difference. The Marshmallow model is selling for anywhere from $8-15, whereas these cost $54 as of right now. I would be willing to say that if compared side by side, 90% of people would not consider the difference in sound quality worth the extra $40. If you are reading this review, you may be someone who does consider a marginal improvement in sound quality worth $40, and if that is the case you will not be disappointed with this excellent pair of headphones. If price is an issue, however, I would definitely consider the Marshmallow model as another option.
