Took this power inverter on a cross-country trip via auto, where I figured it would be useful for charging phones, iPods, and GPS. Works as advertised, and we didn't even notice the little fan, since it is relatively quiet and didn't turn on very often.
Haven't tried it yet in an airplane; have to see if my upcoming flights have a power jack compatible with it.

I too bought this product under the advertised assumption that it was universal. It is NOT. Trying to resolve any problems with Kensington's technical support staff is useless. As far as I can determine through phone conversations and email correspondence, Kensington's technical support staff is simply a foreign call center with untrained, hard to understand staff. Kensington provides no technical product descriptions of their smart tips. You can buy an impressive variety of "compatible" tips for a large number of products, but the only way you will know if they work is if you can physically compare them to your own equipment. In my case I purchased a package of 2 HP smart tips for $[...] only to find that neither size was compatible. So now I've spent good money on an unusable adapter, and just dropped another [...] bucks on tips that don't work. When I bought the adapter it did include a Dell tip that fit perfectly in my HP laptop, but when I contacted Kensington technical support staff to inquire about compatibility they told me that it was NOT! But they didn't know why. It's a voltage issue, by the way. Kensington would be well advised to include power output specs and pin sizes in their product descriptions. My laptop for example reqires a 7.5mm X 5.08mm pin with a power requirement of 18.5V 3.5A. There! Is that so hard? Digital camera Review: NOISY!

This product has a very annoying fan noise when it's first turned on but it eventually gets quieter. In addition, it doesn't always start charging right away--you will need to pay attention that the green light is on; otherwise, the unit needs to be cycled off and on until you get a green light. Finally, it doesn't seem particularly fast to charge devices but that may be a limitation of the 12 volt to 110 volt process. On the positive side, it does do the job for cell phones, iPod, etc.Digital camera Review: 2 of these have died on me

I bought the Kensington model #33917 notebook power adapter when I was on a trip and had left my normal ThinkPad power supply at home. The power supply worked great for 35 days and then just died.
Kensington technical support was great to work with - they sent me a replacement immediately. Unfortunately, that replacement died a couple of months later after only 6 days of usage. Again, their tech support was very courteous and helpful and sent me another one.
If I had been traveling when the 1st and 2nd power supplies died on me, that would have seriously inconvenienced and possibly crippled my ability to do my job - even more so if there wasn't an electronics store around to buy a replacement. At this point, I can't rely on this particular model of power supply so this latest replacement will stay at home for use only in emergencies.
