Digital camera reviews of Kingston 19-in-1 USB 2.0 Flash Memory Card Reader FCR-HS219/1

Digital camera Review: Contact Tech Support before shipping back. Needs Firmware Update!
Summary: 4 Stars

Out of box, this card reader DID NOT work with my Transcend 8GB CF cards. I contacted tech support and requested a firmware update if it was available. After the update, this reader works flawlessly.

I give it a 4 star because Kingston didn't bother to make this update (dated July 2008) publicly available. Tech support needs to give you access to their password protected site in order to download it. Kind of a pain but the installation was easy.

Digital camera Review: Corrupted my CF card and ate my pictures!
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought the card reader in January after receiving a new camera for Christmas. It worked great for about 5 months until one day, with no apparent warning, it corrupted a batch of pictures off the camera's memory card as I tried to import them into my computer. A lot of trial and error proved that the fault was with the card reader. The files (pictures of my son's last few days of school and his graduation) were irretrievably lost, all because this card reader unexpectedly went south on us. Boo, hiss.

Digital camera Review: De-bunking some of the earlier reviews
Summary: 5 Stars

The Kingston Card Reader is a good product. Some of the earlier reviews mentioned that the reader does not recognize cards grater than 4GB. That's not true, I am currently using a 6GB and two 8-GB CF Cards in my Canon 50D and my Canon 40D Cameras and they work/read perfectly in this card reader.
I do plug my card reader into a USB Hub that has it's own power source and if I swap-out a card with a different card, I have to un-plug the reader from the hub to get it to read the new card -- but it does read all my cards just fine.
Lastly, if you push down on the toggle on top of the unit and slide it forward, you can avoid the pliers as mentioned by one other reviewer.

Digital camera Review: Dead as a stone after 2 dozen uploads
Summary: 1 Stars

Used it at most two dozen times and as of today it's completely stopped working despite spending most of its days sitting in a drawer. Will not be replacing it with the same model, aside from the poor lifespan, the slide-in tray is annoying.

Upon reading other reviews: and I did have a few suspect card failures since switching to this reader. Hmm. Can't prove anything but it does make one wonder.

Digital camera Review: Did what I asked of it - success
Summary: 5 Stars

I ordered this after I misplaced and could not find a handy micro USB connector for my Kodac digital camera. I connected this device, put the SD card into it, and it immediately worked - through a USB hub no less. No problems. Unlike some of the other reviewers, I really didn't have much of a problem with the sliding connector - I found a slight push down would enable the pushing back and forth, although I agree you could just leave it pushed back and in the ready use position.
