Having the ability to control the focus would be a nice feature add. The low-light capability leaves something to be desired as well. Overall it is a good camera if you have a well-lit subject and use a tripod. Really nice picture quality. I bought two of these cameras for work. We had previously used a Flip and it worked pretty. However, after reading the reviews decided that the picture taking capabilities along with the digital video was a feature we wanted. The Zi8 is comparable in size to the Flip. The picture & video quality is wonderful - clear, sharp, vibrant colors. Didn't expect much from the microphone, and got what I expected. The biggest frustration and disappointment is the zoom feature. While filming the camera zooms in jerky-stages. There is no smooth transition while zooming, the camera essentially zooms in start-stop steps. And when the camera gets the the highest level of zoom it does something weird to the lighting, in that the picture goes dark. When I try to zoom in on faces in a group in the distance, the brightness is cut in half, until I zoom back out and then the lighting goes back to normal. I can't figure out if there is a setting I'm missing, or it's just a quirk of the camera.
So other than the zooming issues, we're happy with the camera. Pretty simple, with great picture/video quality.

The unit is sturdy and very easy to use. Love it. Transfering pictures or video could not be simpler. Image is crisp whether zoomed in or out. Wish a case came with it. The only thing that makes it not a 5.0 is the battery life is awful. About an hour and half when using it. Doesn't really need focus. Using camcorder to shot gymnastics of a 12 year old. These are very fast shots and hav had no problems.
