Digital camera reviews of Koss KSC75 Portable Stereophone Headphones

Digital camera Review: Be careful
Summary: 3 Stars

The headphones break off of their little ear holders easily. you can pop them back in, but it will never be exactly the same. These were pretty much exactly what I was looking for at the price, though they don't get awfully loud. I say they are pretty good, just a bit fragile.

We have 3 pairs of these in my house. My son loves them for his Nano, I use them in place of my $400 Westones when I am looking for an open air headphone to take with me.

And here are a few comments about using the Koss KSC 75s.

1. They are not as efficient as lots of other buds or in ear phones so you will have to turn the volume up to get them to be pretty loud. This can be an issue with many players since some distort way before the "10 level" on the volume control. An amp will help them out immensely if you don't mind carrying a good $100 add on around with your portable setup.

2. They are fairly flat but lack the extreme highs and lows and are mildly recessed in the mids. They will not have hyper exaggerated treble that burns your ears off, so if you like that sort of unnatural analytic quality then stay away. They are just nicely balanced. Do NOT be tempted to EQ your way to a $400 sound signature. Most portable players EQ circuits suck. They add distortion and if you want to punch up the bass you will run out of amp power to cleanly do it way before you might like. It adds loads of distortion from your struggling amp chip.

3. The fit is a bit loose and on the ears. They do not clamp like sealed headphones. To get a proper fit you may need to put these on like sunglasses and swivel the ear clips from a 12 o'clock postion to about 6 o'clock when looking at the side of your head. That keeps them in place and lets them go on a bit easier. You may need to unclip the earclips from the phone itself and bend them slightly outward if you have fatter ears (sorry, all of us don't have the same ears)

4. These are not sealed headphones and will leak music and allow noise to come in. So I would not be using these on an airplane. Not only will you still hear the engine noise, you'll tick off your neighbor. They are good for those folks who run or use where they want to hear what might be going on around you. While running you do not get the footsteps coming through your ear like you do with in the ear deigns. And you can sweat up a storm and take the foam off and wash them.

5. Value- forget about it. You will not find a more well balanced headphone under a $100 in many cases. I have had about 30 headphones and I still like these the best for under $100. More than Sennheisers, Bose, Apple, etc. No wonder they are the most recommended on the ear budget headphones on headfi, the mecca for headphone freaks.

Digital camera Review: Believe it. The real deal.

Over the years I've collected a wide range of headphones. I'm pretty picky and some of the headphones that I own are quite expensive (one set is over $2000). Among my headphones I have several pair of the Koss based on this driver. I keep a pair in my gym bag, a pair in my car, a pair at the office, a pair by my bed, and one by where I watch TV. The most I've paid for any of these is about $15. I've been through several sets of earpads.

I don't generally like clip on head phones, but sometimes I need to hear what is going on around me and the clipons are useful.

The thing I love about these headphones is that even though they are cheap, they are surprisingly good. When you hear them you hear real music with good detail and a full range. There are plenty of headphones you can buy for $99 that are not as good as these. Are they the ultimate headphone? No. They are not as good as the mid range ATKs, Sennheisers, Grados, Denons or Beyerdynamics. But they also don't need a headphone amp, are cheap and pretty much work forever. They are the best upgrade you can buy for under $20 for just about any mp3 player and are a thousand times better than any of the included OEM earphones. I like them better than the Sennheisers in the $50 range, but some people like the Sennheisers better. The KSC 75, the Sporta Pro and the KTX Pro 1 all sound pretty much the same to me - they are by far my favorite cheap headphones. Even though they are cheap, they are real headphones and several times better than most earbuds.

Digital camera Review: Best Bang For Buck
Summary: 4 Stars

I've now owned these for about 9 months and they're still performing very well. I bought these based on earlier reviews and what I was looking for at the time. I needed a pair o listen while in our work van on road trips. The road noise is terrible and didn't have the $$$ for some high end NC ones.
For the "overall" performance I would put these as a "Best Bang For Buck". Not perfect in one certain area but seems to do a good job overall and sound wise is remarkable for the price. They stay on much easier than most Buds while not strapped to your head or back of the neck.
Pros-
Good overall sound in highs, mids and bass. Really amazing for the...
Price..what can you say.
Fit...this can be a con as well

Con-
Fit...the clipon can be ok but you can bend it for a better fit. Just be careful
Outside Noise...these may appear to be a "closed-in-style" but they do not fit tight to your ear which can be good or bad.
Once-in-awhile the ear cover comes off the clip but it snaps on very easy. "Just be sure to line up both correctly before snapping back on. If not you can break it".

Summary: 5 Stars

This pair of headphones is probably the best that you can get in this price range.

Pros : At this price, I believe you cannot find another pair of headphones that is as good as this, if not better. Sound quality is good considering the price. It might even put some headphones that are more expensive to shame. This headphone will benefit from some mods. You'll be quite amazed at the improvements with some modding, the common ones are replacing the cable and drilling holes on the ear cups. That being said, when unmod, it is still a 'must have' for everyone for your everyday casual listening.

Cons : Build quality is not that good. The clips comes off easily especially if you pack them inside your backpack. From normal use, it serves well though. I wish that it fits more snugly to the ears, because if you try to press them against your ears, you will find that the sound actually improves by quite a bit. Some might also find its looks not that attractive.
