Digital camera reviews of Koss PortaPro Headphones with Case

Digital camera Review: "appropriately ugly"
Summary: 5 Stars

When I read the reviews of this product at goodcans.com (great place for info on headphones for any price range) I was excited. Could there really be a great sounding headphone for under $50?

Then I saw them on amazon. My first thought was, "Man are they ugly." They almost looked cheaply made and poorly designed. I decided to trust my british friends at goodcans.com who ranked them the overall best headphone for under $50 and best portable headphone over all price ranges. I bought them and anxiously awaited their arrival.

When they showed up I felt a little better. Seeing them I realized they had a more retro feel to them like something out of the 80's. I appreciate the lack of cosmetic additions and things that only make a headphone heavier, bulkier and more expensive. It seemed as though all the value had been put into sound instead of shiny plastic decals.

When I gave them a try, I was astounded. I've heard better sounding headphones before, but not in a portable form or for this cheap. The bass was amazingly clean and the treble wasn't too shabby either. The clarity and crispness would beat much more expensive headphones I've had in the past. They're really comfortable too. The temple pad, while it may mess up my hair do, makes them more comfortable on the ears and also helps balance out the sound.

I've read lots of reviews here saying that they are cheaply made and break easily. I contribute that to clumsiness rather than product quality. I bring them to and from work every day on the bus. I take them on and off at least 2 dozen times a day. I've had them for almost 3 years now and after using them pretty much all day at work, at the gym and on the bus, they haven't broken nor have I heard one note of distortion. Even if they should break someday, Koss has a lifetime warranty to replace or fix them.

Take care of them and they'll last for years.

Digital camera Review: $28 No Brainer. Don't hesitate.
Summary: 5 Stars

This is my 2nd pair in 25 yrs. Lost the first set.
Fantastic sound (esp for $28).
Not much thought necessary.

Digital camera Review: (To The Point) Great Headphones Worth More Than You'll Pay
Summary: 5 Stars

I don't want to spend too much time on my review because it probably won't be read.
I have recently bought these headphones for 31 dollars here on amazon and I'd say they are a steal.
They can be comfortable but you'll first have to tinker with them for a while to get them just right. I strongly recommend you DON'T put the upper pad directly on your temple (you will feel extreme discomfort), instead put them slightly behind or above your temple (you are welcome for saving you a lot time.)
The sound quality is very good. I bought these after my Bose around-ear headphones broke after only a year. I've concluded these koss have almost the same quality, but they still do not have the amazing clarity as the 130$ Bose. They have a wide range of sound and responsive and superb bass. I listen to a especially wide range of music (From Black Metal to Intelligent Dance Music(IDM)) and these definitely preform. BUY THEM!!!!

Digital camera Review: 1st impression aren't always correct.
Summary: 5 Stars

Hated these the first time I put them on. They initially entangled and ate my hair at ear phone expansion points when trying them on the first time. Ever since then.. they have not done so, fit very comfortably. Sound quality is the best I've ever heard on headphones.

Digital camera Review: 25 YEARS later, I still love my Koss PortaPro headphones
Summary: 5 Stars

Back in 1985, I had just purchased a new Walkman cassette player with FM radio. It was really nice to take music with me, but the flimsy headphones sold with the Walkman sounded flimsy, too. I needed something with a sound more comparable to my home stereo system, yet portable and affordable in case they were lost, damaged or stolen. On the other hand, I've never been afraid to pay for quality, if I was sure that's what I was getting.

Like now, most headphones then were sold sealed in plastic, making it impossible to listen before buying, but I had an advantage. At the time, I was in the military, and if you asked around on base, you could find someone who already owned most any set of headphones you wanted to try out. So I asked around and listened to at least fifty sets of headphones in all price ranges, from the cheapest sets hung by the register to the high end boutique models you just couldn't find without a careful search.

Of all the brands, I was most impressed by models from Sennheiser, Audio-Technica, Grado, and Koss. Hmm... These are generally brands well-respected for closed ear, full sized home headphone sets. This was even more the case back in '85.

So off I went to the store to pick up the lightest set of Audio-Technica for around $79, but there was a new Koss model I'd never seen there at the store. They were an unusual but lightweight folding design, with large, closed ear 'phone sized diaphragms. At only $35, I was willing to give these a shot, considering that the other Koss products I'd auditioned had such excellent sound quality.

So what about the product?

They're a little strange looking, but they are extremely comfortable once adjusted. The rubberized cord is durable and flexible. The portability is a nice feature, even though I usually just tucked them into a small pouch for travel, rather than folding them up.

Even though I expected good value from the brand, the full, lively and clean sound really impressed me, and still does. Clean, crisp treble without a trace of harshness; full, balanced midrange, and rich, fully present bass that stays clean and goes far lower than you might expect from this size and price range. These really do give the sound of a full, high quality home stereo system.

OK, so I like these a lot. They're probably the best portable headphone value available. But why write a review, 25 years later?

Because they still sound fabulous. They still beat the market in value for dollar. And because Koss stands behind their product better than anyone with a lifetime warranty.

In the 25 years since I purchased my PortaPro headphones, I literally wore out the wire connections twice, once near the jack, and once near one of the speaker elements, and each time, Koss has sent me a replacement set, no questions asked. They looked up my warranty registration from years ago, and that was it.

But if they ever give trouble again, I'll probably buy another set. Not because Koss won't replace them again free, but because they've earned it. And they have a new "25th Anniversary Edition" that's tempting me. ;)
