Digital camera reviews of Koss PortaPro Headphones with CaseDigital camera Review: A bit odd looking, but sound really well Summary: 5 Stars
The difference between this and what else you can get for $30 is incredible. This is a huge step up from my (also $30) Skullcandy headphones. I hear things I haven't heard before in songs.
The construction is solid, I feel like I could step on them with minimal damage. The design, including the ComfortZone switch, ensures that the headphones will not leave your head unless you want them to. It doesn't put too much pressure on your head or ears.
They fold up into a little bag. Good enough if you carry a purse/backpack/European carryall, but you can't stuff them into a pocket.
They bleed a tiny bit if you crank the volume way up. Maybe a problem if you're trying to stealthily listen to music in a cave.
Also, they don't block out sound very well. These might not be the best choice for loud environments.
Also Koss has a lifetime warranty, remember that.
Digital camera Review: A good entry level pair of headphones. Summary: 4 Stars
I like them, but they weren't what I expected. Based on the pictures, I though they would be a sturdy set of headphones that could take a beating, and while that isn't necessarily untrue, I wouldn't expect them to survive in my backpack with my laptop.
But what's most important when buying headphones? How they sound: I consider myself somewhat of an audiophile. Considering what I paid, they have a nice balanced sound with great instrument separation. When I put on a song that has several layers, these phones really go to work - you can hear all the layers as they were meant to be heard, without other frequencies or layers encroaching.
Having owned numerous pairs of sound isolating buds (much to the dismay of my hearing- and ultimately, part of the reason for this purchase): if you are expecting an exaggerated bass response, this is not the set of phones for you. As above, it does not exaggerate the bass (or any layer for that matter) as many buds and phones do.
The Bottom Line is: A questionably durable pair of headphones featuring a nice balanced sound and great instrument/layer separation.
Digital camera Review: A great product at a great price Summary: 5 Stars
For the money these are the best headphones I have ever bought. The are better than a $100.00 pair I bought from Sony. When I wear these out and I know I will, I will buy another pair if they still make them.
Digital camera Review: A great product, and a lifetime investment Summary: 5 Stars
I have had these headphones for 7 years, and the headphones are great. But more than that, KOSS is amazing. If there is a short, a problem (and there have been about 4 over the years), they give you a lifetime warranty on the headphones, and have either fixed or replaced them for a nominal charge to cover shipping and handling. I recommend any KOSS headphones not just because the sound is really good, but because they stand behind their product.
Digital camera Review: A great set of headphones Summary: 5 Stars
I am loving these headphones. It is a real pleasure to listen to music on them. When I listen to music using these headphones, I feel like my headphones have a subwoofer. That is, they serve the whole range of sound, not just the high end. A bass guitar shouldn't just be a low note, it has a certain physicality to it, and these headphones capture that.
At the same time that the bass is powerful, all the rest of the sound is really natural and fully realized as well. You might hear a small sound in a movie and wonder if the sound was real or if it came from the headphones.
I think these headphones sound fantastic. Some experts might know of better sounding headphones, but I'm willing to bet that they cost more. For example, the PortaPros are the 2008 editor's choice at CNET, and their reviewer was astonished at how great they sound.
The one sonic downside is, that they expose some flaws of lower quality mp3s. The files still sound great, but you can tell how crisp they might been if they were better encoded -- kind of like how people sound different on an old telephone as opposed to in person: on the telephone they might come through more clearly, but they don't have a whole lot of the bass of the sound. The telephone is like the cheap ear buds, and the in person is like the PortaPros.
These are very comfortable headphones, even wearing glasses, because the design takes a bit of the pressure off the ears, and puts it on the temples. That means your ear isn't pushed into your glasses as much as otherwise.
Overall, these headphones are great for people who don't have a ton of money and want to try high-fidelity sound at an entry level price. They're pretty leaky, so I wouldn't wear them around town and make everybody listen to my music. But, in my apartment, they are a great substitute for the full stereo when I want to crank up the volume and I don't want to annoy the neighbors.
