Digital camera reviews of Koss UR40 Collapsible Over-Ear HeadphonesDigital camera Review: 3.5/5 light weight, mediocre sound, strong bass, decent portability Summary: 3 Stars
After playing video games and listening to music with these headphones constantly for the past 3 days, I would rate them 3.5 out of five stars if possible, adding the extra .5 for the nice fit/construction
Construction: For a pair of over the head, full size headphones, these do feel very light, and snug withought being too tight. The cord is thin, and the length is a nice medium. As you can see in the picture the ears fold up and inward into the headband to keep these somewhat portable. There's a very convenient netting that keeps the folding headband from snagging your hair, as well as contributing to the nice snug fit feeling.
Sound: The sound in general is mediocre. They do sound good, but I have a feeling that some of the increase in quality I'm experiencing is simply because I'm used to your standard non-enclosed headphones. I noticed the base is strong in video games, but not in music. For example, Whenever I play say, Battlefield 2142...The explosions, heavy artillery fire/tank shells, and the thudding ground-pound of the mechs walking around sound fantastic, but they tend to overpower other sound effects. However, when playing music (128 kbps AAC's) I don't notice the super-strong base, however it does sound better than your standard headphones. It should be noted that 128kbps is NOT full quality music, yet it has become the standard for downloads for file size vs. quality.
Price vs. performance: It's a nice balance. You're not spending very much on these, and you're getting performance may not be great, but certainly not bad. My opinion is that if you're on a budget or not willing to spend a whole lot on headphones, but want to make sure you're getting decent sound quality, then these are a solid and justifiable buy. However, if you're an impulsive buyer, be strong and just hold off until you can afford to spend more. This is my first pair of enclosed-ear headphones and while satisfied for now, I foresee a newer, probably twice as expensive pair in my not too distant future.
