Real fireplace crackling and popping is caused by wood consumption and shifting of logs. That, of course, just ain't happening with a gas fire so a small amount of imagination is necessary here. But, for what it is, this little box is superb! I submerged mine in a basket of fatwood kindling sticks with the speaker facing toward the fireplace, and the sound effects are actually projected into the fire!
I have found that keeping the volume very low sounds much more realistic than higher volume and this particular brand has no obvious repeat like the competition and the rare popping noises are also far more subtle than on the other brand.
