Digital camera reviews of LaCie Desktop Hard Disk 301285U 500 GB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive

Digital camera Review: GigaValue
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm old school when an 80 meg hard drive was considered enormous. I can remember paying $200 for 4 meg of memory! 500 gig for under a hundred bucks. Plug into the usb drive and works like a charm. Amazing!

Digital camera Review: Good Deal
Summary: 5 Stars

I have only had this up and running for about 2 weeks, but have noticed nothing wrong. It is very quiet and keeps connected all the time. The read/write speed seems good for a usb wire. The price is right on this hard drive.

Digital camera Review: Good and Bad...
Summary: 3 Stars

While the price is right for this size HD it does have a couple drawbacks. The first big drawback is that there is no on/off switch. So when you are done with the drive and eject it from your computer, the only way to turn it off is to unplug it, which is really annoying considering all the cords everyone has under their desks and behind their computers. The second drawback is that it really doesn't seem very fast. I have 2 other drives, one is USB 2 and the other is Firewire. The Firewire blows both of them away, but even the other USB 2 I have seems faster than this one. But I may just be imagining that. On the positive side it is a lot of storage space for a low price and Lacie has been pretty reliable for me at least. If you use your external HD a lot I would suggest going with a model that has an on/off switch, and if you use a Mac get the firewire for added speed.

Digital camera Review: Good, but not great
Summary: 3 Stars

I recently bought this drive because I had been happily using another LaCie Drive for my backups for a while, but it was starting to fill up. This seems like a perfectly fine drive, but I don't like it as well as my other LaCie drive for three reasons:

1) There's no power button. The only way to turn it off is to unplug it.
2) It's quite a bit louder than my other LaCie drive. It's still fairly quiet, but the other model is virtually silent. This one is not.
3) The power supply is of the type that plugs directly into an electrical outlet. It's wider than a standard electrical plug, so if you plug it into a power strip it renders the outlets on either side of it useless. The other model's power supply has a thin cord that connects it to power, so it doesn't monopolize half of your power strip.

The only benefit that this one has over the other one is the price ($20 cheaper as of this writing). This seems like a solid drive, but don't buy it if you want to be able to turn it off.

Digital camera Review: Great buy
Summary: 5 Stars

I have had my new hard drive for about a month now and have had no problems. It has handled extensive use my multiple simultaneous users with no ill effects. It is quiet and effective. I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in purchasing a hard drive of this size who wants to get the most from his/her money.
