Digital camera reviews of LaCie Hard Disk 1 TB FireWire 400/USB 2.0/eSATA External Hard Drive, Design by Neil Poulton 301315UDigital camera Review: Great! (and stylish) Summary: 4 Stars
Purchased this very Cosmo looking 1TB Hard Drive because it was going to be sitting on the component shelf feeding a WD TV HD Media Player. What a great looking, great working pair they make. Initial install of the LaCie included a nicely laid out formatting prompt giving you choices of NTFS, FAT32 or combinations of them for cross-compatibility. Speed is good and it is VERY quiet. Perfect for this application in an entertainment suite. The only thing that could make this any better would be a network connection.
Digital camera Review: Horrible purchase Summary: 1 Stars
I had planned to add this drive to my home entertainment system so run my WDTV setup so that I can stream videos from the drive to the TV. I ordered this drive mainly for the look and the blue LED light. I unpacked the drive, added 2 movies, and watched one before going to bed. The next day the drive was completely useless and I had turned it off and made sure it was away from all heat sources. So in under 24 hours of having the drive and very little data transfer, it won't do ANYTHING. My computers tell me their were errors so I ran a 3 hour repair on it. This did nothing, now whichever computer I hook it to lags out because it can't read the data on the disk. I have purchased many hard drives over the years (both internal and external) and I have never had such horrible luck with a drive before.
I had to go out to Best Buy and purchase another drive the following day. This time a WD My Book 2TB drive that has worked flawlessly. I will update this as I find out how the return process for this LaCie works.
WORD OF ADVICE: DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE.
PROS:
It looks cool
CONS:
EVERYTHING else, this drive lasted me less than 24 hours.
Digital camera Review: I Would Say Buyer Beware, But LaCie No Longer Sells This Item Summary: 2 Stars
Up until this drive, I was a devout & happy customer of LaCie. I bought this drive primarily for its sleek look and only after it had been released for a few months. I should have waited longer for user's comments to accumulate. For 1 1/2 years the drive worked perfectly (connected via eSATA), cool, and quiet; I had no complaints. Then last week, I realized I'd already filled the drive to 900GB and would need additional HD space very soon. I intended to order an identical HD, but couldn't find it in stock on Amazon.com. I was in a hurry and didn't want to spend time trying to find out why it wasn't available. I also didn't want to order it elsewhere so I just ordered LaCie's Rugged XL model instead from Amazon. The very next day, the Neil Poulton drive started making a horrible metal on metal grinding high piercing clicking sound. I immediately powered it off. That was the last time I had access to any of the data on the drive. LaCie Support has offered to replace the drive as its still under the 2 year warranty. I will send them the old drive as soon as I get the drive back from a technician shop that's trying to pull the data off it. In the meantime, I'll continue to read more of the many Amazon.com customer complaints relating to this HD.
Digital camera Review: I can't reccomend Summary: 1 Stars
Within the first 10 days the drive failed. I should have returned via Amazon instead of Lacie.
No phone support. Each reply to their tech support took 24 hours for a reply. Then after paying to return it to them I received a rebuilt drive. Mine was 10 days old, the one I received had a very used case.
Now 4 - 6 months later the drive has failed again. I once again waiting 24-36 hours for simple replies because they have me duplicating test steps to verify the drive needs to be returned. So I spend 5 minutes following their steps and wait 2 days for a reply.
Worst of all this drive is a backup drive and twice I've lost my data.
You can find an equivalent capacity drive at the same or a better price. I regret purchasing a La Cie. They lost a customer and word of mouth advertising with a negative slant is what they gained.
La Cie do you listen to negative reviews? it's not just that I lost my data twice, it's how long it takes for me to get an RMA.
Arghhhhhhh!
Digital camera Review: IT'S AS QUIET AS A MOUSE! Summary: 5 Stars
This external drive not only looks cool but it's QUIET. I hate noisy grindy drives. External drives should maybe be seen and definitely not heard. Not sure but it seems to wake up quickly and respond quickly.
