Digital camera reviews of LaCie Hard Disk 1 TB FireWire 400/USB 2.0/eSATA External Hard Drive, Design by Neil Poulton 301315UDigital camera Review: Best hard drive I ever had Summary: 5 Stars
I have an external RAID 1 (mirrored) system using two of these LaCie drives. They have worked flawlessly for the past month. They run quiet and cool even under heavy load.
My programs run on internal drives, but my data is stored externally. I do some video editing and I have actually seen an improvement in speed. That was not something I expected. I ran a speed test and was pleasantly surprised. These external drives actually run faster than my internal drives. I initially considered running them as RAID 0 (striped) but discovered I didn't need too.
I can't speak toward LaCie dependability, but my RAID 1 setup should protect data if one drive fails. I don't care about looks, but come on LaCie. It's a brick with an annoying blue light, no matter who "designed" it. That being said, I do like the shape and size. It fits.
I highly recommend these drives. They far exceeded my expectations... even though they're French.
Digital camera Review: Best thing that has ever happened to my iMac Summary: 5 Stars
Last Christmas, I asked for a TB of memory from my folks (I'm in college with my own computer) and they delivered this item to me on December 25th 2008, and here we are, almost ten months later... not one bit of grief!
To this day, it now holds over 2000 video files including 47 Flash Videos (about 20MBs each) about 2000 TV Episodes (ranging from 180MB to 300MBs) and over 130 movies (1.5-2.1 GBs each) 'with' much more room to spare (I still have about 200 GBs left of space) I'm a film major and I love to have backups of my content for my personal pleasure and this external drive is my basically my happiness. (I don't even watch the main TV anymore) Its very easy and simple to both use and to access whatever content you place on it, especially through the fire-wire port.
For Mac users, it works perfectly fine with both OS Leopard and Snow Leopard... My only suggestion is if you have this hooked up in your room, turn it off at night, because the blue light it emits can be a little bit bright (especially if you are still writing files to it; it will also flash on and off while doing so).
Digital camera Review: Beware... Summary: 1 Stars
Less than 4 months old & and already broken! First, it started clicking. Then it began making a strange siren-type humming. The icon disappeared on the desktop & hard drive. You don't get a CD disk to reformat the drive w/your purchase, big bummer. LaCie support, well, it sucks. It tried all troubleshooting suggestions & none of them worked. It $14.95 per call to talk to a human [although it's still under warranty] or you can submit your issue to tech support on-line and get this message ---> "We will respond to your question in the order in which it was received. When a response has posted, you'll receive an email that directs you to login to your LaCie online account."
Every time you call and/or email..you are pushed back to the end of the line and have to start all over.
Nightmare purchase. LaCie, NEVER again.
Digital camera Review: Buyer Beware! Summary: 1 Stars
I bought my Lacie external hard drive and the disc failed in less than a year. After speaking with a customer representative, I sent it for "testing" to their repair center. Turns out, they simply replaced it and I lost my entire catalogue of iTunes music, as well as photos and other irreplaceable items. All they could give me was a "sorry." Do not trust the quality, and definitely do not assume your data is protected. Learn from my loss, please!
Digital camera Review: CHEAP!!!! Beautiful drive and works right out of the box Summary: 5 Stars
I love the price, $147 for a 1 GB drive, you gotta be kiddin' me! Anyway, I love this drive, I run a marketing department and needed a drive to back up all files, video, Photoshop, Pictures, Music, Aminations and numerous projects. It has been working great. There are 3 things I love about it so far.
1. It is quiet!!!! Really it is!
2. Reliable Time Machine back-up drive. Wonderful!!!
3. It cost only $ 147. That is a $1.47 per GB.
So far it has served me well, but I know Lacie drives have their issues, I bought this to replace an errant Lacie Drive, Triple Raid, 1 TB. But this one has been very very nice to have.
