Digital camera reviews of LaCie Hard Disk 1 TB FireWire 400/USB 2.0/eSATA External Hard Drive, Design by Neil Poulton 301315U

Digital camera Review: Excellent External Hard Drive
Summary: 5 Stars

I have three of these now. I use one on my Digital Video Recorder (DVR/TIVO) and two on my personal computers. The firewire is fast, easy to set up and these External Hard drives are surprisingly inexpensive, fast and huge. Not much to say really, they work really well. They do have a bright blue led that might bother some, but otherwise they are flawless.

Digital camera Review: Excellent High-quality Reliable disk
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the best disks that i've ever had. I do lots of video editing work with HD material and as anybody who edits raw video at all knows it takes up gigabytes of space with HD sometimes more than 60gb for a 60 min tape! So i currently have two of these disks running via FW400 to my mac and they havn't failed me yet (Had them for 2 years) under heavy use. Almost everyday i use these disks to store my raw video files on and these disks look nice too! They are very quite although sometimes they get quite hot but thats not really a problem because then the fan kicks in for an hour or so to fix things up.

But essentially this is a great reliable pretty disk, and i'm sure i will be buying another in the near future.

Digital camera Review: Failed within first 2 weeks
Summary: 1 Stars

This drive failed within the first two weeks of use. It now beeps constantly and will not boot. An unreliable backup drive is NOT useful.

Digital camera Review: Failing drive after less than a year & TERRIBLE support.
Summary: 1 Stars

I was initially very pleased with the 1TB LaCie HD (Neil Poulton eSATA), but after about 10 months of use as my home Windows backup drive Windows 7 suddenly began reporting that the drive had a problem. Further review of the warning details indicated that the drive's S.M.A.R.T. interface was indicating a problem and predicted a drive failure. LaCie's first tech support response was that the drive didn't support S.M.A.R.T. over USB and thus Windows was erroneously reporting the problem. I pointed out that the drive had operated for the previous 10 months without Windows reporting a problem, I was operating the drive over eSATA and that the actual drive packaged within the LaCie enclosure did indeed support S.M.A.R.T. over a SATA interface. LaCie then recommended that I reformat the drive, which I did even though I assumed it was a standard support tree response. As anticipated, Windows continued to report the error post format (formatting isn't going to change the flag in the drive's SMART table once it is tripped). LaCie's next response was pretty much a rehash of "Windows is erroneously reporting an error that doesn't exist" at which point I became quite "frustrated." (See a word that rhymes with "hissed" and starts with the letter P). Consequently, I downloaded a third party tool to confirm what brand of drive (SeaGate) was being utilized within the LaCie enclosure and then downloaded the appropriate manufacturer's support software (DOS SeaTools). I created a DOS boot CD and ran the DOS SeaTools. SeaTools reported that the SMART parameters were out of spec and issued a warranty support code. Finally, once I provided said information and the associated SeaGate warranty support code, LaCie agreed that the unit would need to be returned for service (i.e.: hard drive replacement. i.e.: take the failing unit back and send me a refurbished unit).

I'm a pragmatist. Hard drives fail - that is the basic reality of a spinning a cylinder at high RPMs for extended periods of time - sooner or later something is going to fail (you hope for later, but a reasonabl person accepts sooner). Consequently, although I was disappointed by the short drive lifespan (probably the shortest I've personally experienced), I understood it - and actually I was pleased to be warned of an IMPENDING failure as predicted by SMART parameters verses needing to restore my computer via a Windows backup and learning that it didn't exist due to a failed disk.

HOWEVER, I was extremely dissapointed by LaCie's support. I'm an engineer who has used computers for a number of years. Would the average consumer user know enough to pursue this problem to replacement like I did? Should the average consumer user have to prove the existence of a real problem the way I did? Nicely designed drive enclosure. Poor quality hard drive. TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SUPPORT.

Digital camera Review: Fantastic and beautiful
Summary: 5 Stars

Fantastic external drive that allows you to partition it as FAT32 and NTFS, so it can be used on multiple platforms.
