Digital camera reviews of LaCie Rugged All-Terrain 320 GB Firewire800/Firewire400/USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive 301832Digital camera Review: No Complaints Here Summary: 5 Stars
Awesome buy. Comes with all wires needed. Fire-wire 400 & 800, UBS 2.0 and a USB power sharing cord allowing you to hook up a USB hub, etc when needed. It also has it's own preinstalled software for easy formatting which gives you the option to dual format so you can have one partition for Mac and another for Windows to store everything from both operating systems. Excellent for moving things back and forth on a Boot camp setup. Arrived very quickly.
Digital camera Review: No One Year Backup for Macs Summary: 3 Stars
I debated a long time about which drive to buy for my daughter who is going off to college. I settled on this one because of its ruggedness and the one year online backup. I figured if she was careless with her equipment, at least she would have the online backup for her work. The online backup provider does have Mac software, but LaCie says it is new, and they don't have a contract for it right now, and don't know if they will. I'm disappointed and surprised this exclusion was not clearly stated on amazon, nor on LaCie's website.
Digital camera Review: Not plug & play with XP Summary: 3 Stars
I was surprised to find that this drive is not plug and play with XP. When I first plugged up the drive with USB, it began a formatting process and then I got a fatal error. After that, the drive was not visible through windows interface. The enclosed manual had no details about this. The website did have some information, even though it was not completely clear. After a couple of hours, I got the disk cleaned and formatted using a DOS prompt. It had to be treated as a corrupt drive because it uses the newest drive format (out of the box) that is not recognized by XP. I would not recommend this drive to the novice XP user. According to the website there would be no issue with a Mac or Vista.
It is fast going from my SATA II hard drive to the LaCie using Firewire 400. No other issues at this time. The back-up software is very simplistic with few options and it is very slow. It is much faster just to copy the files.
Digital camera Review: Not worth the trouble Summary: 1 Stars
As an IT group, I bought 2 of these, but they had re-occurring issues with connecting to Windows XP and Server 2003. Not worth bothering with. Not recommended.
Digital camera Review: Pretty good Summary: 4 Stars
The package was delivered on time and the description was accurate. Only down side was I did not realize while ordering that it was USB powered so if you plan on using the usb to as your data connector, you have to have a computer that has two available usb ports. This is sometimes problematic. It was my bad though, should have read description more closely. Overall good product.
