Digital camera reviews of LaCie Rugged All-Terrain 500 GB FireWire 800/ FireWire 400/USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive 301371Digital camera Review: Fast dirve, but a couple of flaws. Summary: 3 Stars
If you're looking for a fast drive, this is it. Transfers files fast & so far has been reliable, so that's why this product earns 3 starts.
Now for the reasons why stars were deducted:
1) The firewire connection is very loose on my MacBook Pro with the 800 cable that came with my drive.
Using the 800 port is very loose and if I shift my computer around it very easily ejects itself, which causes the problems of risking losing data from the improper eject. The firewire cable doesn't even come completely out, it just pulls itself out just enough to be ejected. For that, it's very frustrating to know that I have to be extremely careful when moving my computer just a tiny bit. I even give it a little push back in every now and then to make sure it hasn't worked itself out at all. This is not a problem for other 800 firewire cables I have, nor is it a problem with my USB ports. This could just be a problem with my specific cable that came in the box with my drive, but it's annoying and worries me all the time about ejecting itself.
2) The drive gets HOT and there's no indication light.
I always worry about the drive overheating because it gets HOT. And by hot, I mean it hurts my hand if I pick it up after it's been plugged in for a few hours. Not sure if that's healthy or normal and has any effect on the data. It also has no indication light that shows it's on, so that's a bummer.
Overall, it's a great drive, I'm not sure if it's worth the price given the flaws.
Digital camera Review: Fastest Delivery Ever Summary: 5 Stars
My review is more about my shopping experience with Amazon. I've had a Lacie 160GB for almost 3 years. No problems at all. I actually bought the Lacie 500GB to replace a Western Digital portable drive which corrupted 4 of my video files. I ordered the Lacie 500GB very late on a Thursday night and received it on that Saturday! I live no where near where it was shipped from. Not only was the product far cheaper than buying it at an Apple Store, but I got free shipping.
Digital camera Review: FireWire Hard Drive Summary: 5 Stars
My husband likes to make videos and needed a new FireWire hard drive to copy the clips so he can manipulate them.
Digital camera Review: For son in college Summary: 4 Stars
My son called that his backup hard drive died and he needed a new one. I looked for a more rugged one with plenty of storage for him as he is a bit rough on things. He used a mac book and he reported they worked great together and no problem hooking up and using.
Digital camera Review: Good Device Summary: 3 Stars
This is based off of my experience with a 250 GB version.
It worked well for a long time. It is rugged.
One problem: the USB input on the drive itself became loose and eventually just fell off inside.
Bought a replacement shell to fix the problem, but for something so "rugged" it sure did have a weak USB connection to the silicon board inside.
Maybe they fixed it in this version!
