Digital camera reviews of Leatherman 78108011K XE6 Juice Storm Gray MultitoolDigital camera Review: Built with utility from the frame up Summary: 5 Stars
Leatherman's Juice line of tools is designed for all-around use by anyone. This means that it's supposed to be carried on you anywhere, not just at a camp site or a work site--they have other models geared specifically towards those purposes. This is Leatherman's best offering of their Juice line of tools and it really shows. It offers every single tool on other models of Juice in a frame that isn't too much larger than the smallest model. If you're someone in the market for the much more expensive Victorinox "Swiss Champ" the Leatherman XE6 offers nearly the same amount of utility at a far lower price. Essentially the tool takes the most commonly used tools for camping and the most comonly used tools for around the house/emergency fix use.
The XE6's construction is fairly different from other lines of Leatherman tools. First of all the frame has stamped annodized aluminum covering it to lend color to the tool's body. This is fairly attractive, but cosmetically mars slightly more easily than some of the other models of Leatherman tools. Of course this particular item is "Storm Gray", so it doesn't really matter too much as it doesn't show that badly. Secondly the tools on this model have springs that hold them in an open or closed position, but they don't have the heavier "locking blade with a release latch" system that some of the "work site" models have.
However, this model has typical Leatherman features that make it far better than other multi-tools/knives out there. The phillips head screwdriver has a fully formed, yet compact, head and not a "flat phillips". The corkscrew has a lift "assist" like those of a good "waiter's tool". The bottle opener is combined with a non-sharp military style can opener and is actually almost as easy to use as a sharp can opener while being generally safer. The scissors have a rather robust leaf spring system that easily beats any other multi-tool company's leaf spring design (I've had various other pocket knife multi-tools where the leaf spring would consistantly crack in half after 2-4 years of scissor use). There's also a subtle "fisherman's scissor" style tip on the front of the scissors so that it's easier to cut slippery things like fishing line.
Overall I've had the tool for around 8 months and I've pretty much carried the thing every I've gone. There have been many times when I've been without my normal tools and have needed to utilize the XE6. I've used it to assemble/disassemble PCs, reshape deformed pieces of metal, cut cables while fixing bicycles, strip wires while modifying battery operated electronics, open packaging, sharpen other knives, divide up food, as a fork (the long, narrow knife is good for this), open bottles, tighten bolts, and then some! The only thing that I wish this model had on it was a non-bit driver based 6mm hex and 4mm hex since those would be pretty useful for doing basic bicycle maintenance as well as tightening up Ikea furniture.
