Digital camera reviews of Linksys WUSB11 Wireless-B USB Network Adapter v4Digital camera Review: A product that improved in later versions Summary: 3 Stars
My first impression of this product was harsh...and the product was not a good one. A subseuqent purchase (for use with Tivo) suggests that Linksys has worked out many of the issues, and this device should be expected to work well in recent verisions. Original review text follows:...I would create a "zero stars" category. 30 days of Linksys products operation and tech support activities related to this device included: (1) A support technician telling me over the phone" "maybe you don't know enough about computers to be setting up a home network..." (2) This adapter crashed Windows XP when connected via a sep USB 2.0 port residing on an expansion card (it worked fine when connected via the motherboard's USB 1 port; the Linksys tech who made the comment above was NOT the one who figured this out; guess who did). (3) It took two weeks of daily tweaking (including multiple instances of key string re-entry) to get the 128-bit WEP to work. (4) 30-days after purchase, the WUB11 wireless adapter failed. Linksys promised an RMA via email in 12-24 hours. It took four days and three additional phone calls. If you are still in the product selection phase, avoid Linksys like the plague. I will never consider them for a future home or business solution, and will never recommend them to anybody in the market from home/small office wireless solutions.
Digital camera Review: Adapter will not work with Windows XP Summary: 1 Stars
The WUSB11 Adapter will not work with Windows XP. The computer will not recognize the hardware. When I tried to load the drivers I received an error message that the drivers were incompatable and damage could result from loading them. This is in spite of the adapter documentation saying that it is compatable with XP. If you have XP don't buy the adapter. I plan to return mine.
Digital camera Review: Agony. Summary: 1 Stars
I finally installed the linksys wireless system; the router plus the wireless USB adapter. I have spent upwards of four hours with support personnel, who were unfailingly courteous and anxious to be helpful. The problems are multiple: despite assurances to the contrary there are issues in configuring the system to work with Windows 98 first edition. The signal is weak, despite the fact that the router is only 10' vertically and 20' laterally from the receiving computer. I now have intermittent access to the internet at speeds that are slower than dial up. The whole enterprise has been a black hole for my time and endlessly frustrating. You may well be more fortunate, but if you buy it and it does not function with little effort, cut your losses and return it immediately.
Digital camera Review: Almost perfect product has a serious flaw Summary: 4 Stars
This wireless ethernet transceiver can be very helpful in setting up a network not only because it's extremely easy to install (USB plug and play) but because it's the cheapest 802.11 transceiver I've found. It does, however, have a serious drawback... the internal antenna which has a limited range compared to every other 802.11 device I have tested, including PC cards. Even with "line-of-sight" to an Access Point only 100 feet away, the signal strength ranges from good to weak, occassionally dipping down to 2 Mbps. This is, of course, with other 802.11 devices operating in the same building even though they're designed to work with each other in proximity. There is one real nice feature in the configuration software... just double click on the icon on your task bar and you can pull up a "Site Survey" of all available access points with their respective name, ESSID, channel#, MAC address, and signal strength. This feature alone well justifies the cost because it acts as a conservative diagnostic tool when setting up an 802.11 network. P.S. It's self-powered via USB and you may want to invest in a USB extension cable to allow placement of this device in a better location.
Digital camera Review: Almost worked with xp Summary: 2 Stars
I had it going for about 36 hours. Unfortunately when I returned after 4 hours, it was unable to send. Yet I was able to ping my computer using both a computer on the same network, and even using my cell phone. But not even my firewall was able to detect any outbound activity. So I returned it.Some other problems I found was xp seemed to lose the card, and using detect new hardware would not even detect it. I ended up having to uninstall and reinstall. There are just way too many issues that were similiar to when I tried version 2.6 with 98.
