Digital camera reviews of Linksys WUSB11 Wireless-B USB Network Adapter v4

Digital camera Review: Check the Cable!
Summary: 5 Stars

I am using this with Windows XP and a Linksys wireless router. The adapter works great, as long as you connect it properly. What Linksys doesn't tell you is that you have to push the USB cable into the adapter until it CLICKS. If you don't hear a click, the computer will not recognize it. Calling Linksys tech support won't resolve this problem either. They'll tell you it's dead and to send it back. But trust me, just push until it clicks.

I was having some trouble roaming around my house with my laptop and WPC11 (Linksys) PCMCIA card. Signal strength did not appear to be that great. I found that tipping my laptop on edge I received a good strong signal. This led me to do a little on-line research and I found this article:

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,3973,20417,00.asp

On WEP and antennas. I almost purchased an antenna for my WAP11 (Linksys) unit, but instead decided to try the WUSB11 first. Glad I did. The price for an antenna ($30 to $60) is comparable, but the flexibility of the WUSB11 is preferable I reasoned, if it worked.

It did. Out of the box it is plug-and-play. The box contained: the unit, a 6ft USB cable, an installation CD, and a quick-install guide. I was up and running in about 3 minutes (took me a couple of those minutes just to turn on my laptop!). It was that easy. The time included configuring the WUSB11 to interface with my SSID and WEP settings! Wow! Okay, now for the test: will it work better than the WPC11. I began roaming my house, and with the exception of a couple of remote closets (really dark anyway), I received a 50-80% signal everywhere! Antenna orientation is a major factor on reception!

I decided on a more rigorous test: would it work out in my garage (separate from the house). The farthest corner of the garage is over 100ft away and the signal would have to travel through 3-4 interior walls, 1 exterior brick wall, and 1 wood covered garage wall. Signal strength was 60%! My WPC11 would barely register out there.

Okay, sold. I will be purchasing a couple more of these to allow me to place computers around the house for the rest of my family and NO wiring.

I highly recommend the WUSP11.

Digital camera Review: Connection Losses
Summary: 3 Stars

Every 5 minutes or so, the connection just ends and starts. It works as advertise but these disconnections are annoying, i cannot download anything at all. Does the same for all my friends.

Digital camera Review: Connectivity is spotty at best
Summary: 1 Stars

Great idea for a product... just plug this into any PC, notebook or any other networkable device that can use an IP address. There is a 6' USB cable included, and the installation is easy. Windows 2000 will recognize the device upon plug-in and wizards will prompt for installation... but, I think using the CD and the installation setup.exe is much better b/c the installation SW will also auto-detect the wireless LAN settings and not just use defaults.. there is a better chance of getting connected right away. However, although the installation was simple... this unit kept disconnecting on me constantly and INCONSISTENTLY.

This disconnecting manifested itself in a 3 ways:

The 2st manifestation was where the adaptor would suddenly be faulty, where it would state that the network cable was unplugged (you can see this in Windows 2000 by opening "Network Connections" you will see the list of adapters and a few columns, including status and description. The status will say "network cable unplugged." The only way to solve this would be to unplug the USB cable and plug it back in, or disable, then re-enable the adapter from the right-click menu, or reboot the machine.

The 2nd manifestation was where the adapter seemed fine, but, I wouldn't suddently lose my IP address. Same solution

The 3rd manifestation was where I had an IP address, but, could not ping anything, not on the LAN or outside the firewall/WAP-router. Same solution.

I recently purchased the new PCI 802.11g card which works on b & g networks at 11mbps & 54mbps... no problems at all...love it... going to write a review about that too.

Digital camera Review: Could be better.
Summary: 3 Stars

This system is great. Range is ok. Tech support was ok. No complaints. I must say that is a few other companies sold this type of device the price would be much lower... Seems like it should cost about $49 not $(...). Amazons price was the best I found and shipping was fast (...). Thanks amazon.com:)
