Digital camera Review: A good buy for the family, but adjusting settings isn't always user friendly

So, I love that my son can now Skype with his grandparents anytime he wants. He can interact with them as he couldn't before and that is worth it's weight in gold to me. That being said, I am still having a few issues with getting the video to sharpen up and sometimes the lighting system gets it a little wrong. It's not superb at dealing with situations where the light in the room is at an odd angle for the camera (such as our computer room).
The video does degrade a bit on the receiving end through Skype, but I expected this just due to compression and such. I had some difficulties getting any of the avatars to work, but wasn't that invested in them so I just pushed it aside for a day when I am bored and feel like blowing a few hours on something odd.
My parents are not computer friendly for the most part and the ease of use and set up with this camera was a bit plus for me, as I purchase one for them as well. I love the high quality lense, for someone who knows about high end cameras I am happy to have a Car Zeiss in my Webcam.
The microphone is top notch. There was no muffling or distortion of the voice and no need to talk loud or adjust the input/output in order to hear the incoming video clearly.
I liked the idea of the mounting brackets design, but it turned out to be rather hard to adjust to my parents flat panel. The hinges are not quite long enough to pin it in place properly, so out comes the good old packing tape. A little strip over the base of the bracket and she's stuck to the top of that screen good. A third small hinge somewhere in the design would have made it a little more ideal for sitting on our flat panel. The swivel head is great and I like the light weight. I wish the hinges were a little tighter so that when you do get it in place you could tension set it really well, but details details.... I wish my car could automatically unload my groceries for me too, but we can't have everything. :)
Overall, I think this is the best webcam for the price range and by far the best for the easy set up and use. It automatically syncs up to Skype if you tell it to and we didn't even have to install the CD content to set it all up. A A+ in that arena as I despise the excessive junk that seems to accompany some install software.
Go out, buy it, and if you think maybe its too much when you can get one cheaper. Look at the video reviews, calculate how much money you will save Skyping instead of calling by phone, look at how much you plan to use it...and how much the person on the other end needs a high quality video or not.

This camera raises the bar for webcams (not very hard!). It has good color, very good light sensitivity, and good resolution. It works well in a high contrast setting, like a bright light in a normal room, and still shows faces clearly. Of course the image quality isn't as good as a real digital camera but it is a webcam after all. The software is quite sophisticated and has some cute features which are fun even though they don't work 100% of the time. The install on a computer running Vista was easy and quick. The auto and manual controls work better than I expected.
