Digital camera reviews of Logitech Cordless Optical Trackman (USB/PS/2)

Digital camera Review: Al's thought
Summary: 5 Stars

If you use your laptop like I do, in my easy chair with no table, this mouse is perfect.

Digital camera Review: Almost but not quite perfect
Summary: 3 Stars

As close as I've found to right for a trackball with a wheel for CAD work. Personally, the buttons and wheels are to far from the ball for use without actually moving my hand but I've got short, fat hands so it could just be me. It's the best I've found so far but I'll keep looking.
And........ Please ...... make it corded. Wireless on a trackball is just unnecessary.

Years ago, I bought a Microsoft Trackerball from a friend and used it with my I book: Once I got a new Imac, I decided i just had to have another, because the Apple mouse is a pain. I decided to purchase this Logitech Trackman because of the cordless feature (I couldn't find a bluetooth Trackball). While the design and feel of this mouse is sleek and stylish, the controls are a bit awkward and everytime I use it, i can feel a carpal tunnel attack coming on. I figure the more I use it the more adept my hand will become, but I can't honestly say i would recommend this Trackman. The Microsoft Trackerball, has a much smoother feel to it. I am actually going to take the Trackerball I use at work and move it home and then use this Trackman at work---we'll see.

Digital camera Review: Almost perfect, but ...

Plus: nice look and feel
Plus: optical trackball is flawless; smooth as silk, excellent diameter, excellent positioning.
Plus: extra buttons that can be customized.
Minus: Left-click button is just a bit too hard to push. Makes it hard to drag items. I also find that sometimes I click the wrong object because by having to push so hard it forces your other fingers to move the trackball off-target. Didn't they QA this thing? I boought two and they both are the same in this regard, so it isn't a manufacturing defect.
Minus: I reprogrammed one of the buttons above the left click to be a left click button, and I programmed the other one to be a double-click (because they are easier to push than the left-click button). These function properly about 80% of the time, but if, for example, you try to double-click an email item in Outlook, instead of opening the email it opens something like the office assistant (very bizarre).
Minus: I agree with the rest of the planet that the receiver is too big and can't be conveniently used on a laptop.
Others complain that it isn't big enough to rest your hand on, but I created a wedge from cardboard and duct tape so that it is inclined (forward down) about 25 degrees, and I comfortably rest my hand on it (I have normal sized adult male hands).
Fix the minuses and this is the ultimate mouse!

Digital camera Review: Almost there!

The engineering of this product is currently a comedy of errors, however, I believe that once the driver and manufacturing issues are resolved, this will be one of the best trackballs on the market.

The three primary flaws are as follows:

If you have a metal table, you will need to sit the receiver upside down on your desk, as the antenna was apparently placed on the bottom of the device. With the reciever propped up, I can use the trackball from across the room, so this flaw is a minor inconvenience.

There are four feet on the bottom of the trackball, and the trackball is warped enough to rock on two of them. Minor annoyance that can be fixed easily fixed.

This trackball won't work well without a driver that can re-align the axes of the trackball; as mentioned in other posts. I have verified that this is a problem in mac os x.

I have hope for this trackball, however, since the button layout is the most intelligent I've seen, and so far, all of the flaws are problems that can be solved with a little tinkering and a little more software from Logitech.

I have tried Microsoft's Trackball Explorer, and Microsoft's thumb operated trackball as well, and their ergonomics and construction were awful compared to what this will be once they work out the manufacturing and software bugs.
