Digital camera reviews of Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick (Silver/Black)

Digital camera Review: A buy you won't regret
Summary: 5 Stars

Flight sim enthusiasts will enjoy this stick even though it has no force feedback capabilities. It responds really well to input. Have not calibrated once. It carries a heavy base and center seems to remain in place.

Digital camera Review: A good Joystick

I have had the stick about a week now and am very happy with it. Though I do have to learn not to over control in FS9 especially when flying the Extra 300 wow that thing's quick to pitch or roll. All in all though once I turned down the sensitivity I am able to control and land easily in all but the Extra and I am sure that is I not the joystick. The Throttle is better than any other joystick I have had since starting flight simming back with FS98 I would also like to mention that my computer is older and its slower frame rates effect how fast the joystick reacts and makes it easy to over control the airplanes.

Mac
PS I lost my joystick in storage when do to a need to move quickly left me unable to afford to make the locker payments. once i had replaced the CPU to i lost along with the joystick i saved up to replace the Joystick. and having quit smoking i decided to treat myself to a fancier stick the Saitek PS41 Aviator Joystick it was awful the rudder and throttles never would work even after downloading the 200+MB calibration software and repeatedly re calibrating the stick. the vendor would not take it back because i had opened the package and loaded the software to discover i could not get it to work. fortunately it works with my sons Xbox so i gave it to him and reordered the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick and it works just as well as the first one allowing me to hand fly with precision once again. I would recommend this Joystick to anyone who is going to buy a Flight Simulator program.

Digital camera Review: A good joystick at this price point but has a few weak points
Summary: 4 Stars

I have had this Extreme 3D Pro USB joystick for about 18 months, and use it exclusively with FS2004 and FSX. It was easy to install - just plug and play. FX2004 and FSX both worked perfectly with it from the moment it was first plugged in and I never did install the drivers from the CD that came with the unit. I have owned many joysticks over the last 20 years, and most were similar in price and construction to this one.

First the good points:
1. Plug and play on my PC, which is running WinXP SP2. No extra drivers needed, and I have not needed to calibrate it even after 18 months.
2. Quality of construction and materials is reasonably good - not the best, but then again this joystick is priced under $40. Joysticks used for professional and military training sims, made of metal instead of plastics and with ball bearing pivots, probably cost hundreds.
3. Durability okay. The primary trigger, which activates the wheel brakes in FS2004/FSX and machine guns in Combat flight sims, failed only a week after arrival. This is not the first Logitech joystick I have owned in which the electrical switch under the primary trigger crapped out shortly after purchase. Logitech needs to source a more robust switch for this, apparently. The rest of the moving parts have held up with no failures.
4. Feature set is very good. This joystick has plenty of buttons and switches, more in fact than I ever use for FSX, and the throttle and rudder-twist functions work well.
5. Nicely weighted. You need a substantially weighted baseplate in a joystick to keep it from sliding around, especially with combat flight sims.

Bad points:
Considering that (as far as I know) this is Logitech's top of the line consumer joystick, it has a few weak points. The poor quality electrical switch I have already mentioned. In FSX, it's not too distracting that mine no longer works, since I have always just used the period key on the keyboard for the wheel brakes, but for a gamer that mostly plays combat flight sims, the loss of the gun trigger switch would immediately render this joystick pretty much useless. Like I said, Logitech probably needs to get a better quality part from it's suppliers for this switch.

The most disappointing aspect of this joystick is probably the overly stiff centering springs. I find this joystick to be very fatiguing to use in certain circumstances; for example, when making an instrument approach in bad weather in a small, slow, lightweight plane like the Cessna 172. Twenty-plus minutes of making small, but near-continuous steering corrections with this joystick will really tire out your hand and wrist. I can see where the stiff springs could be necessary in a combat flight sim, but in FS2004 or FSX, where practicing touch and go landings is a common use of the program, the need for frequent small, precise steering inputs makes me long for a joystick with a lighter, smoother touch.

Despite the criticism in the preceding paragraph, this is probably the best joystick overall in the under-$50 price category, so unless you want to spend a LOT more $$$, you might as well go with this one. As mentioned in other reviews, this joystick is strictly right-handed; the little plastic shelf upon which you rest the side of your hand fits only the right hand. Happy landings!

Digital camera Review: A great Joystick
Summary: 5 Stars

I upgraded to this one from the Logitech Wingman Extreme, which was also a fine product (if it ain't broke don't fix it). I use it with the MS Flight Simulator and it's great. Overall, I'm very satisfied.

Digital camera Review: A very good joystick: well made and comfortable to use
Summary: 4 Stars

The Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick is a good all-around stick. For those wanting to use, say, Flight Simulator for educational purposes, the Extreme 3D is a good choice.

In fact, this type of stick is much more realistic than models with "Force Feedback": the stick movement on a genuine modern helicopter in flight feels smooth and fluid, like power steering on your car. Force Feedback may be fun, but I don't think it's very realistic for many of the scenarios it's currently used in.

Specifically, here's what I rated it by:
* Quality of components and assembly: The action of the stick is smooth. No flimsy play in the controls. The hat switch and trigger pull have a positive feel with close tolerances.
* Comfortable handgrip: like the overall product, the design and machining of the grip is off high-quality, without any annoying seems or sharp ridges.
* Smooth throttle control: this is a small detail, but compared with some of the other models out there, it's notable.
* Stable base that allows you to either rest it firmly on a table or in your lap.
* Subtle movements are reflected in the game.
* Overall appearance - it looks as good as it performs.

Things to NOTE:
* This is definitely a right-handed joystick.
* It plugs into a USB port
* I used it with Microsoft Flight Sim 2002 running on an XP Pro system: Installing the software that came with the joystick was effortless and when I opened Flight Sim, all of the buttons were already mapped to the appropriate functions.
