Digital camera reviews of Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard (Black)Digital camera Review: Excellent Keyboard!!! Summary: 5 Stars
For a gamer this keyboard is awesome.Best keyboard I have ever owned. My next gaming system I will buy another one or buy the next newer model. The gaming keyboards by Logitec keep getting better.I had the last logitec keyboard that was lighted with the gaming profile but, this one is much better the LCD screen is brighter and gives more information. The LCD panel and the lighted keys are also a plus. You have a clock to let you know the time and also a news ticker that let you know the latest news updates going on in the world. If you install a game and the software picks the game up as long as it is in the sofware profiler the game is imported into the software so you don't need to add the game in.For the price of under $100 well worth it.This ketboard is also great for Flight/Space and sub sims like Flight simulator,X-3 Reunion and Slient Hunter 4.Looks great when you turn off the lights at night while flying at night in Flight Simulator to Cruising in space in X3.The keyboard is very well lighted day or night that you can always see the keyboard for any key input you may need.
Digital camera Review: Expensive and haven't found much use for the fancy features yet Summary: 3 Stars
I bought a Gateway P-6831 FX gaming laptop and I absolutely hated the position of the Fn key - I wish it were between L ctrl and the Windows Key rather than in the far back left corner. I never got used to it after trying for over two weeks. I noted that I never play games except at home, so I decided to go for a docking station type setup with a laptop cooler, USB hub, this keyboard and a Logitech G5 mouse.
This keyboard layout took a little getting used to. I'm used to having my hand hover over the left side while gaming with WASD. Typing is fine since my hands are better aligned. I would sometimes be hitting the G6 button instead of L ctrl, but after a mistake, it's quickly fixed for the rest of the session. Though, the possibility of making the error at the start of a session always exists.
I haven't found much use for the LCD or G macro keys. I don't even look down at my keyboard and it's resting on a keyboard tray so half the time it's hidden by the desk. I haven't got a feel for the G keys, so I would have to look down to make sure I was hitting the right key. I sometimes missed my esc key and hit G1 and that could cause a lot of problems.
In the end, I disabled the G macro keys, don't even look at the LCD, have the windows key disabler permanently switched on, and use the media key functions instead of the ones found on my laptop. Over 2x the price just for the backlight and glow that matches my laptop basically.
I've looked on G15 fan sites for plugins for the LCD and macro ideas for the games I played, but I haven't found anything useful beyond what I did with a normal keyboard and what I can normally bring up on my screen in an instant.
Update: I found some useful functions for the LCD. It's great for benchmarking software. You can monitor CPU, GPU, mem temps and load on each of the cores using Everest. It was useful to me for a shortwhile, but I don't even bother looking down anymore since it's predictable. Only when I'm actually doing an extreme test will I bother to look. If my setup had my keyboard setup just below my monitor, maybe the LCD would be more useful.
Regarding the macro keys... once I got used to the layout I played with them some more. I made a few fun macros such as one that I used as a taunt and another that was basically a "jump really fast" macro which I used a joke in WoW running into a wall and banging my head repeatedly waiting for the mana users to recover.
Digital camera Review: Extra Features Mostly Useless Summary: 3 Stars
So, on the positive side, the G15 has pretty much all the functionality that you would expect from a keyboard. I'm going to focus on negatives because most of the positive things about this keyboard are pretty mundane: "it types good."
The keyboard has an annoying orange glow. If you're not a touch typist, a backlit keyboard is really just 100+ extra LEDs lighting up your room at night. Even if you do need to look at the keyboard keys in order to know where they are, I still wouldn't recommend a backlit keyboard because its a crutch and you're better off just forcing yourself to learn the positions of the keys.
You pretty much have to use Logitech software in order to bind the extra keyboard keys, which is pretty annoying. Most of the time you want a keyboard to "just work." This is especially an issue if you're using a non-Windows platform because there may not be software support available for your keyboard.
Who thought putting an LED screen onto a keyboard was a good idea? What's the point? If you need information, just look at your computer screen, which should be right in front of you. The screen is completely useless and I've never ran into a situation where I was like "oh, this is nice to have."
The keyboard is also really bulky. It has some sort of half-baked area to rest your wrist against, but it's really too small to be useful. It just ends up adding this annoying extra area to the keyboard that isn't needed. In general, the keyboard has a lot of extra space.
Finally, the added keys are not very well placed in my experience. Most of my keybinds are placed around the WASD keys so it's usually preferable to bind a key + modifier than use one of the extra keys. I only really used G6 as an alias for control. Maybe this is a preference thing, I don't know.
As far as typing, durability, and that stuff, it seems solid after ~two years of usage.
Digital camera Review: FAIL! Summary: 2 Stars
Keyboard was ok for about a year, but then 2 of the keys stopped working, TAB and G11 don't work anymore. Pwnd a lot of n00bs with it, but this board is worthless now. Most keyboards last 3 to 5 years easy, and since this keyboard is "teh gey" after one year I just can't recommend buying it.
I will say my Logitech G5 laser mouse still pwns, but just can't recommend the keyboard. Get a different brand. Peace, and keep gaming!
