Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I'm a gamer and a fan of Logitech's G-series peripherals, so I was eager to add the new G35 headset to my game arsenal. The 7.1 positional sound is great for supported applications, and there is a manual switch on the back of the left ear cup to change to Stereo, if 7.1 is not supported. Overall, while I love the superior sound quality of the G35, I do have a few gripes, which I will consider as teething problems for this relatively new product.
Firstly, this is a large headset since it has "over the ear" cups; it is going to take up an entire drawer if you store them in your desk. Personally, I wish the ear cups folded for easier storage.
The fit is tight and does a good job of blocking unwanted external noise. This may also be a problem for some, since you can't hear the phone ring, kids etc. The interchangeable headbands give the user a way to personalize comfort, and are a good included accessory. The headbands have velco strips on the back and, due to the angle cut ends, can only fit in one way. Still, the first time I wore the G35, I found that after a few hours, I developed a headache from the tightness of the fit, but I hope this is something I will grow accustomed to with time.
The 10-foot braided cord is amply long, but it kinks easily and is hard to straighten. Luckily, there is a permanently attached velco cable wrap that allows for easy shortening to your desired length.
One of my favorite features is the "automatic mute" when you fold up the mic to a vertical position. There is also a mute button on the bottom of the left cup, but I find it's easier just to throw the mic boom to the vertical, than it is to find the button in a hurry. Also on the lower left cup is the volume wheel, which I felt could have been a little stiffer with more noticeable clicks (think: mouse wheel), but it is adequate and does the job.
The three G-keys are also located on the left ear cup, at the top. While I was initially excited by the idea of programmable keys, my hopes fell somewhat upon installing the software. These are only programmable to the handful of programs supported by the software (hopefully they will add more with future updates!) and at the moment, I find these pretty useless from a gamer's standpoint. Ventrilo 3.0.5 is one of the supported programs with a total of six programmable functions: "Mic Mute", "Sound Mute", "Push to Talk", and "Ventrilo Command" 1, 2 and 3. Firstly, "Mic Mute" is redundant, and "Push to Talk" means taking your left hand (character movement) off the keyboard. Other supported programs for the G-keys include i-Tunes, WinAMP, Windows Media Player, WinDVD, and PowerDVD. There is also an option to use voice morphing and use the G-keys to toggle different effect, and the ability to tailor your settings with custom Profiles.
Also from a gamer's standpoint, there is a known issue when using the G35 with Ventrilo. The mic creates a high pitched hum in right ear. Some people will find this annoying, but for me it was not really noticeable when I was playing a game, since the game sounds drowned out the hum. I could see if you were trying to use the G35 for voice communication (such as Skype) that it could be very annoying. However, Logitech promises a software update to correct this issue.
Bottom Line: This is a headset with great sound, comfortable fit, and promising features, but with the lack of supported programs for the G-Keys and the mic hum problem, I feel it's a little overpriced.
