Digital camera reviews of Logitech G9 Laser Mouse

Digital camera Review: All-around excellent product
Summary: 5 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
As primarily a MMORPG and RTS (Real Time Strategy) player, I was a little intimidated when reading the feature set of the the G9 because I wasn't sure if the features would be easy to understand and implement. When it arrived, I was somewhat concerned about the shape and feel of the mouse as well.

After about a week with the G9, however, I can say that it is a fantastic product. The ability to control the sensitivity levels on-the-fly (via a small +/- button just below the Left button) is perfect for RTS games ('Company of Heroes' and 'World In Conflict') where effective camera movement is essential for success. It's also helpful when playing different games of the same genre with their varying camera response times.

The grip of the mouse took a little time to get used to. I wouldn't mind if the mouse were slightly longer for larger hands, and if the right hand side of the mouse were slightly wider to rest my entire hand on. But having gotten used it it, I can't think of returning to a less capable mouse for gaming.

The small included weights for the mouse body were another option I was iffy about. But when combined with sensitivity selection, the weights add appreciable heft for shooters where you want more precision and no jittering crosshairs on the screen.

Finally, when using the G9 with a Web browser or application, three pre-programmed profiles change up the functionality of the two up/down buttons on the far left side. In one profile they serve as forward/back buttons; in another they adjust the size of the text. The scroll wheel is also selectable between the traditional ratcheted wheel and a perfectly weighted free moving wheel, so you can zip to the tops and bottoms of long posts or pages without any effort.

My only problem so far - which doesn't do anything to how much I've appreciated the mouse - is with the included Logitech software. SetPoint doesn't seem to work on my XP machine. In fact, when it this software is installed, I can't use the mouse at all, and SetPoint doesn't recognize that I have the G9 plugged in. (I have SetPoint Beta Build #127). Fortunately, the mouse runs fine without the software. When the G9 SetPoint software goes "live," I'll give it another try.

In sum, this is an excellent gaming mouse whose initially intimidating feature set has proven to be smoother and more effectively implemented than I thought it might be. Logitech has always made excellent controllers, in my opinion, and this continues that trend.

Highly recommend.

Digital camera Review: Almost a five star but...
Summary: 4 Stars

This mouse is nothing short of amazing. Let me break it down...

Pros:
- Customizable weight is a big plus (I used 28 grams which is about an ounce)
- Changablbe LED colors (I picked blue since red bothers me)
- Ultra high resolution for gaming which is adjustable (I use max resolution since I'm a claw grip user)
- Includes a slim and wide body grip (I used wide)
- Has a cable so no problems with bluetooth or batteries
- Stores configuation setting in the mouse

Cons:
- The foward/back button are too far back so I have to reposition my hand to hit them. My two MX1000s do not have this problem and are the finest mice I've ever used.
- You need to install the Logitech SetPoint software and it wants you to update it frequently.
- The wheel seems a little flimsy
- Forget it if you're left-handed
- Too big if you have small hands (which I don't)

All things considered, this is a good wired mouse. Even though it was built for gamers (who have no tolerance for poor quality), it is an excellent general purpose mouse that I use everyday. I purchased three of these and gave two away as gifts. The receipients were thrilled because they were using mice without a wheel or forward/back buttons -- probably with a ball instead of a laser too. I can't imagine using a mouse without these features.

Digital camera Review: Almost all I could ask for

You've heard all the great things about the G9. Customization, Control, Comfort. In my opinion, it's the best mouse for a gamer on the market right now. Unfortunately, it has a major flaw: the lack of midline buttons. Only the standard middle mouse button exists, admittedly with side to side rocking, but the lack of the other central buttons is a huge hit for me. Playing World of Warcraft, I utlized all four of the middle buttons on the 518. I found them to be perfectly placed and reliable. Now, I find myself trying to use the side to side of the middle mouse button on the G9, and it is just not dependable. Yes, you can use the "DPI up and DPI down", but these buttons are intentionally tough to press... not something you want to do for five hours of raiding using Maul/Heroic Strike on.

Great mouse. I give it a 95%, but I just need those extra middle buttons back to take it to 100%.

While other places have this mouse as low as $75, Amazon was able to make it even more affordable! Other than that, the mouse in of itself is great. The ability to custom weigh your mouse is definitely great. Just for fun, I tried seeing if it really made a difference and put all the weighs in and that was definitely not the bext setting for me. After some trial and error I was able to find the adequate amount of weight for it. I thought that the removable covers were a bit excessive for a mouse, but trust me, once you get used to them you just can't explain to yourself how you ever made without them! The satin finish on the "non-gaming" cover is definitely very comfortable, and the "gaming" cover is made of a material that doesn't slip with sweat and is much smaller. My hand would get cramped if I would always had that one on, so it's nice to have an option to remove it and use a separate one. The bottom switch for the "veloci-scroll" and the regular screw scroll makes it very nice to scroll through webpages with the flick of a finger or to be very precise between chaning weapons and such in games. The profiles are very much appreciated as it can help the mouse be separate from Gamin and other functions and the LEDs are definitely a must. Holding this mouse in your hand definitely makes you feel like you're going to p0wn by just weilding it (and it does happen too!). Anyone that sees it, even non-gamers, compliment me on the finesse of the mouse, and it's got a very sturdy deisgn. The settings under the SetPoint software are also very detailed and you can go as far as setting up the Y and X axes on the mouse independantly... I know!
Now, not everything is good on this mouse. I think that the main gripe with it (other than the price, but it's really worth it) is that a lot of buttons are just not recognized by my programs/games. I come from an S510 mouse and I used to be able to side scroll left and right with the wheel in Windows Media Center, and no matter how many settings I mess around with I just can't get it to do it with this mouse. Also, in some games when I set up certain buttons, they either won't show up or they won't work or they won't be recognized by the game. That's really disappointing because the many buttons on this mouse - I think - make up about 20% or so of the value. Overall though, that is somewhat minor and no on really wants to assign button presses to the left and right scroll wheel, but in some games I wish that functionality did exist. It was hard getting used to the mouse at first - it's shape, speed, precision - but I honestly don't even remember exactly how much it bothered me, that satisfied am I with the product so far (it's been roughly two months).
If you are looking at this porduct, it's obviously because you have the budget to purchase it, and if that's the case, there really is no reason why you should not get it, unless you're looking for extreme mods, in which case, you won't find them in Amazon.
