Digital camera reviews of Logitech G9 Laser Mouse

Digital camera Review: Detailed Review: Top quality mouse, perfect for gamers, Linux users, and everyone else
Summary: 5 Stars

Simply put, this is by far the most impressive mouse I've ever seen. Some of its unique features suit me exceptionally well, so I will get into some specifics in this review.

The mouse looks and feels great. With two separate grips, a weight cartridge, the ability to control LED colour, and the ability to control mouse wheel style, it has an unprecedented number of hardware customization options. I found the wide grip very comfortable, with excellent choice in material. It's not nearly as large as a G5/G7, so some might not like that. Ultimately mouse comfort depends on your hand size and shape, and since this is very personal you should take all comments about comfort in reviews with a grain of salt. I like a heavy mouse; with the heaviest weights in the mouse has a very solid and smooth feel to it when its moving. As noted before, the mouse wheel can be free spinning or clicky. On most logitech mice you switch this by pushing in the wheel. Convenient, but you lose your middle click which is annoying. Here, there is a button on the bottom to switch mouse wheel styles. So, you keep the middle click in exchange for not being able to switch styles on the fly. For me this is far preferable, because I use middle click a lot, and I use the clicky style exclusively for games but flywheel otherwise so it works out. As to the actual DPI tracking of the mouse, its excellent. I'm used to the 2000 DPI G5; I found the 3200 here excessively high. However I am currently using it at 2600 and its quite amazingly precise and fun to use.

The software is incredible because... you don't need the software. To be specific, you only need the set point software to set up the mouse the way you want. After that, it works perfectly on its own. This is great if you use Linux like me because all your settings on DPI's and buttons work perfectly. You will need Windows to run the software once though, but even if you don't dual-boot getting one time access to Windows is pretty trivial in my mind. Further more, you can actually store 5 different profiles on the mouse, and switch on the fly. By choosing different LED colours for each one, you can see what mode your mouse is in at a glance. Each profile is completely independent in terms of DPI settings, buttons, everything. Another huge plus is that you can bind keystrokes to mouse buttons in each profile, and again its saved on board. Not only is this perfect for games, but it also means that you never have to deal with getting Linux to "see" a mouse button again. Just bind the button to some weird keystroke combination and you can use it as a shortcut anywhere, zero hassle.

This mouse is simply one of the most polished electronic products I've ever seen. If I had to make one negative comment, it is that I would like the mouse to be a bit bigger. However, mouse shape and size is one area where you can never please everyone so this can't be held against Logitech. However the hardware works perfectly, the software works perfectly, and they are both incredibly customizable. With the mail in rebate that was available until recently, I got this mouse at just 30 dollars. This has to be the biggest steal I've ever seen, but even at 50 dollars its an amazing purchase. Five stars, hands down.

Digital camera Review: Do not buy. One replacement with Logitech the same bugs even worst
Summary: 1 Stars

The first G9 started freezing after a few days. I probably cool feature when during you work the mouse freezes for a few seconds :-) Any way, after long conversation on Logitech forums they suggested to replace the mouse. I got the new one a few days ago with almost the same problems. The only one difference - it STOPPED working today. I personally use logitech products very long time and this one is the worst Logitech product I've ever seen.
I'm a developer and can say 100% it's NOT my hardware but buggy product.

Digital camera Review: Ehhhh!
Summary: 2 Stars

I really wanted to like this mouse. I've used the G7 for 3 years now and I absolutely love it. Unfortunately my G7 began to interpret single clicks as double clicks, and I was back in the market for a mouse.

I chose to go with the G9 this time because of its amazing "on paper" specs, as well as the glowing reviews on various sites, which really had me waiting at the bottom of the driveway for the package to show up :)

Unfortunately, no cigar.

The major problem for me was that most of the features listed on the box, ended up either not mattering to me personally or they just didn't work as well as I might have liked.

First, as another reviewer said - the choices of adjustable grips are between "tiny and pretty small". My G7 fits my hand like it was custom designed for it. The G9 seems to have been designed for much, much smaller hands.

Second, the micro gear wheel with the ratchet turned off is a great idea. Except that it takes a whole different set of fine motor skills to use effectively. Worse, the scroll wheel in "friction less" mode is truly friction-less - so you end up accidentally scrolling or zooming (if your control key happens to be depressed) when you least expect it. I'm not sure if my mouse wheel was just defective (it happens) because some of the others seem to particularly like this feature above all else.

Third, the weight tuning is something I ended up not caring for in the very least. I tried different combinations to see if it mattered - but it really honestly didn't. Maybe I'm just not the mouse connoisseur I thought I was.

Fourth, customizable LED display colors seems cool in theory - but again, I can't remember the last time that LED color was a deal breaker for me. I set it to blue and was done. I could have set it to red too. Or green. Or mauve (well, I'm not sure what mauve looks like, but you get the point.)

Fifth, the shape of the mouse resembles a pack of cards rather than the smooth filled curves of the G7. I couldn't make this feel natural no matter how hard I tried.

I really could go on.

So was there anything I liked? Actually, yes. I liked that it had on board memory for user profiles. I liked the texture of the grips and how they form fit the mouse itself. I liked the SetPoint software on Windows XP, which was real easy to use. I liked the non fray-able heavy duty cord that connects the mouse to the USB port. I liked the fact that it does have 9 buttons - if you count carefully (the scroll wheel is 3 buttons by itself). The harder part was to remember what each of those mappings did :(

Unfortunately, the positives didn't quite outweigh the negatives and I made the decision to go get myself a new G7 instead.

As with any ergonomics product, the choice of mouse is entirely a personal decision. So, the stars I've given it are a review of how well this mouse works with my hand and my temperament, and is not intended as an engineering review of the standalone product.

Digital camera Review: Everything I wanted in a mouse
Summary: 5 Stars

All that was promised in the features are true. It's easy to install, it gets some time to learn how to adjust the weight, but worth it.

Digital camera Review: Everything you need + more.
Summary: 5 Stars

I went from the Logitech Mx518 to this mouse, and I'd say I like it a lot. I like quality products which is why I mainly get products from Logitech for computer extras like speakers and mice and etc.

This mouse has a sturdy build and many nice features. I really like the fact that it saves profiles in the mouse and you do not need to do installations on the computer, just plug it in and all the data is on the mouse so it's good to go. You need to download a free software program from Logitech to change the light color and to adjust the three profiles.

It's also got the 2 grips and the weights which are a nice feature since people all have different preferences. I wouldn't mine if it was a little more glowy like some Razer mice, but it looks really good as is. The frictionless mouswheel (can switch it between click and frictionless with button on the bottom) is also a really nice feature. I highly recommend this mouse to gamers.
