Digital camera reviews of Logitech Harmony 550 Universal Remote Control

Digital camera Review: A great all-around remote
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought the Logitech Harmony 550 for my fiance as a Christmas gift. It was easy to set up, and my husband is very happy with his new remote. We have a complicated system with lots of components and visitors / baby sitters were never able to figure out how to watch TV or movies when we weren't home. Now it's simple, no fooling with different controllers. The software was exceptionally easy to use and very logical in the way it was presented.

Digital camera Review: A great concept badly engineered
Summary: 2 Stars

The Harmony 550 is an "all right" but not a great universal remote. For the price tag it demands, there are better options.

Shortcomings:
(1) Ergonomics -- the buttons are just plain too small. And if the size of the buttons isn't trouble enough, the non-spatial row of buttons design is a second cause for annoyance. In other words, you never get an intuitive feel for the button layout, and it results in daily occurence of user error...even after 8 months of ownership. And it's nearly impossible to navigate with the lights in the room dimmed.

(2) Ease of configuration -- you can get up and running in crude fashion in 15 minutes. Getting the remote to really work like the one that came with your TV/DVD player/Receiver takes about 2.5 hours of trial-and-error optimization. It turns the volume up & down in much larger quantums than the OEM remote, and will often change one too many channels when channel surfing. Through loading and reloading and resting the remote, these types of kinks can be reduced after a 1-2 hours of debug. But they can't be eliminated altogether.

Logitech took on a big challenge in making the king of universal remotes. This one has software optimization and ergonomic problems that other Logitech remotes don't have.

Digital camera Review: A great remote!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is our first Harmony remotes and we love it.

The effectiveness of Harmony's remote with its "activities" based set up, is a great solution for complicated systems with many different components.

I spent about 30 minutes perfecting the 550 using the online programming interface; it was easy to use and comprehensive. All I had to do was plug the remote into my computer's USB port, install the updated software, and download all of my existing programming. It worked perfectly!

The unit has backlit LCD display that is easy to read. Keys, while a bit small, are indented, which provides a tactile feel and response.

I am very pleased with this remote, and recommend it to anyone who would like to control a variety of components with an intuitive, easy to use, single remote control.

Digital camera Review: A home theater must have
Summary: 4 Stars

I wasn't sure about paying for another piece of equipment for my home theater, but this is a must have.
This remote controls up to 15 devices.I don't have that many(I don't think I will either). We're happy(i.e. my wife)with the purchase. The blue backlit buttons come in very handy.
It might be a hassle to keep going through the device buttons to control the dvr,tv and receiver, but it replaces all of those remotes easily.
Worth the money that I paid and I'm happy with my other Logitech products.Since this is my first universal remote I can't compare to other models. This is the lowest model # and exactly what I needed for my small system.

Digital camera Review: A little confusing at first
Summary: 4 Stars

This remote is pretty nice. It was a little confusing at first to set up but one you got the hang of it, it's very cool. I am pretty good with electornics and I use a lot of logitech equipment. But the web based interface to set up the remote is sloppy, and that's bad coming from logitech. But once you figure out how to set it up the way you want it, it works great. I like the customization, although tricky, its nice having one remote. Even my wife likes it and can work it and she isnt very tech savy. If you have the time to figure out how to set it up, it's a very slick remote and I would reccomend it.
