Digital camera reviews of Logitech Harmony 670 Universal Remote

Digital camera Review: Almost perfect for me....
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased this item at the local store because I was tired of doing the remote control shuffle. All of my remotes are multi item programmable but none of them carried all the codes for all my devices. Store had it on sale for 129 so a comparable device. Programming was very easy. A few clicks, entering model #s. It only choked at my receiver which is a slightly older one. But after a few questions and pressing a few buttons on the original remote it was set up and ready to go. I am controlling a SDTV, Satellite box, 2 dvd Players, cd changer and a A/V receiver. I frequently use both DVD players for DVD-Audio or SACD playback so going into advanced functions for both players and the Receiver is a must. Very easy to find what I was looking for and using the remote is very easy to learn.

My drawback is the volume. I use the receiver for volume on everything and if I use the programmed activity keys it is ok, but once I have to get into the advanced features of each device I lose volume control until I go back to the receiver, but than at that point I lose dvd/cd control. Pressing one of the smart keys tends to solve the problem but I wish there was a way to make the volume always locked onto the reciver, no matter what the device.

Digital camera Review: Almost the best investment I made into my home theater
Summary: 5 Stars

This little remote is one of the best things I bought for my home entertainment center. It has software that runs on the computer and downloads all the different manufactures equipment so you can just pull off of lists and then plugs into your computer via a USB plug and downloads all the configuration.

It took me about a hour total to get this thing up and running. I entered all my components, it prompted me through little wizards, I connected the remote, it downloaded stuff, and I tested it. One thing didn't work as expected so I plugged it back in and changed it. Having a "Watch TV" button that turns on my receiver, cable box, and TV then sets the TV and receiver to the correct inputs is great. No more fussing with multiple remotes or having to remember what input goes to what. Another nice feature is you can click like "Watch Movie" or another command and it switches stuff around. When your done you hit "Off" and it turns off everything that it had turned on. The other nice thing is it added in the "special" buttons on my different remotes to its little interface so I still have access to them like the A, B, & C buttons on my cable box and the Aspect/Picture Size button from my TV. And best of all I don't have to teach people how to use my TV when they want to do something....just tell them to hit the button they want while pointing it to the TV and wait for the green light to turn off. I haven't had to use any of the other remotes since I got this and thats a very good thing.

Digital camera Review: Almost... just about perfect for me
Summary: 4 Stars

I've had this remote for a couple of weeks now, and I have to admit... the first two or three days, I hated it, and the only reason it's still around is that I hated using five different remotes even more. So it got its chance.

Over the next week and a half, I've grown very fond of my little remote. I have gotten so sick over the past few years of having to explain all the different device remotes to anyone that wanted to use our entertainment system, because if you don't know how things are connected (which no one else in the house cared about learning), then you have no idea which inputs serve which function, and when you have multiple inputs on an AV Receiver, a TV, and a system selector, people stop doing things themselves after a while. I literally got phone calls at work and in class from family members asking how the heck they were supposed to play the Xbox after watching TV.

Even these family members can use this remote to maneuver, even though none of them would actually listen to the descriptions I tried to give them. That part, I love. The fact that there's only one remote sitting next to the couch is amazing. I can't say enough about how easy it's become to move from playing video games to watching TV to playing a DVD or VHS, and even to playing the iPod from its docking station.

The only problem I have with it is the setup. The software is extremely slow to boot and maneuver, and it's not very intuitive at all. But with patience, it can be programmed to just about exactly what I want. The only issue I really truly have is that I wish I could tell the remote that the volume button ALWAYS means I want to turn up (or down) my AV receiver. It almost always knows that - as long as I've not switched from an activity (the screen it defaults to after you push an activity button) to a particular device. I guess since I don't do that too often - because I am able to program the functions I want into the activity itself - it's not a big deal. But it would be nice to program specific buttons on the remote to always perform a function if I choose, rather than having to do it by activity.

Oh, one other small thing - after I update the remote through the USB link, the remote thinks all devices are off, so if anything's on, it's confused. It's a simple enough fix to remember to turn everything off first, update the remote, then turn it all back on. Otherwise, I've noticed that this remote is pretty danged smart about leaving things on or turning things off when I switch from one activity to another (like, if both activities require the television and the AV receiver, it won't send another power signal to those devices, because it knows it's already on from the first activity).

So my recommendation? If you know your home media system inside and out (including where to find model numbers), and you have quite a bit of patience (or know someone that does), you'll make it through the setup phase and into the loving-this-remote phase. If not, really, stick to your three or four or five remotes. You'll probably be happier, and ~$100 richer.

Digital camera Review: Amazing Product
Summary: 5 Stars

I recieved my Harmony 670 and hooked it to my computor, I was amazed how easy it was to use. My reciever remote was different than the one showed in the Logitech software however it allowed me to manually insert the information and then down loaded it to the remote. Now that I have used it for awhile it still amazes me how well this product works. Another neat feature is the help button if something is not working correctly just press help and it will ask you if the device is on or not and just press no and on it comes. I would and have recommended this product to my friens

Digital camera Review: Amazing universal rermote!
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm very happy with my Harmony 670! I have a DVR, so the grouping of buttons specific to DVR users was important to me. What's even better is that I finally have a TRUE universal remote, and the very first one I haven't had to return out of exasperation.

You can't go wrong with the Harmony line. Their customer service can't be beat, their products are amazing, and if you buy yours from Hi Def Lifestyle on Amazon Marketplace, you'll be paying way below retail! The 670 lists for $149, and that's essentially what it sells for unless you're lucky and find a sale price of around $135. But I got mine for $78 from Hi Def Lifestyle's shop in Amazon Marketplace, and the item arrived quickly, and brand new in a sealed package without a single problem to its name. I can't help but highly recommend both the Harmony 670 AND Hi Def Lifestyle!

All you need to do is enter the model #'s of the various electronics you'll be controlling (including such items as room fans and air conditioners), as well as which inputs they use for various functions (such as which input your TV uses to see the DVD player on, or which input shows you satellite tv), and before you know it, you'll be pusing one button for functions that used to take several remotes and a boatload of button pushing! I never dreamed that I'd consider paying more than $20 for a remote until I found out what the Harmony remotes can do, and how much grief they save you! For awhile, I kept all my old remotes out, fully expecting to need one or more of them to be able to watch tv or a DVD, but not once have I needed to pick up an old remote to get one of my electronics turned on. But now I've put away all my remotes and don't care to ever see them again. I won't even need them if the Harmony loses its programming! All I need to do is plug in the USB cable and voila! It's programmed properly again.

I had one small itemm of confusion when I first got my Harmony, and I called customer service, and I had mentioned something that I wanted to fix later, but didn't have time to fix with her right then. When I returned home later and plugged in my remote, the first thing I noticed was that the customer service rep had done it for me! What a sweetie! I wish I'd gotten her name!

I honestly do not believe you can go wrong with the Harmony line!
