Digital camera reviews of Logitech Harmony 676 Universal Remote ControlDigital camera Review: Best thing since sliced bread Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of those products that make you say, "How did I live without this?" after the first use.
The step-by-step set up directions were easy to understand and the device works great.
We went from three separate remotes, and the hassle of having to adjust video and sound feeds, to a simple push of one button to switch from TV to a DVD.
My dad is in his 70's . . . guess what he's getting for his birthday.
Digital camera Review: Better than original remotes Summary: 4 Stars
This remote works better than the company supplied remotes. Set up is a snap with Logitech web site. As far as battery usage, too early to tell, but have feeling that this wont be major problem.
Digital camera Review: Brilliant design Summary: 5 Stars
A flexible remote that truly allows you to get rid of your other remotes in the house. The best part is the activity buttons that take care of all the commands necessary to turn on/off needed components and do the right switching for a given task such as playing a DVD with sound through the receiver. The PC interface is awesome for setting things up. It is a little intimidating to any computer novices. For the advanced user the sky is the limit on customization of your remote down to the sequence of commands displayed on the LCD. Downside is it may take a while to tweak everything.
The online database for devices is immense. Even less than common devices are on it (I have a roku hd-1000 for displaying memory card images in HD and a 12 year old yamaha CD changer-both in their database!!). If it's not in the database, the remote has learning capability. You can create your own macros to control all your components. Can even control the speed at which commands are send from the remote! Best of all you can create a backup of your remote's programming to store on your PC/Mac in case of catastrophe!!
For the price you can't beat this remote.
Pros: Immense flexibility and programmability via PC/Mac online connection, button design and layout, a novice can operate it (when set up correctly!!), price
Cons: Set up can be tedious and intimidating to computer novices, could use next AND previous buttons for scrolling through LCD display commands.
Digital camera Review: Brilliant! Summary: 5 Stars
I've tried other universal remotes and always returned them because they were limited in what they could control on each device. It always seemed like I ended up with a solution that required serious performance tradeoffs, and often had me grabbing the original remote to control some features.
Not so with the Harmony line. Because it connects to your computer, and accesses an ever growing Internet database of devices, with even the most initial of setups, it controlled nearly every feature of every device in my system - including my early 1990's solid state JVC receiver, a device NO other universal remote could even turn on. And for those few features it couldn't yet control - it didn't recognize the PIP and disc menu commands on my new LG DVD recorder - it has a phenomonal "learn command" feature that allows you to point your existing device remote at the Harmony and "teach it" unknown button commands. So far it has worked every time.
It is true that after initial setup, tweaking the remote activities took about 50 connects to my computer and trial and error over 2 days - total time maybe 5 hours - but once I got it dialed into my system, everything works absolutely perfect. It really is an amazing achievement.
Digital camera Review: Buttons Stopped Working Summary: 2 Stars
This was a great remote for about 12 months. Then the buttons used for the DVR stopped working. It was hard to fast forward and stop a recording and finally became almost impossible. Clearly this remote was not made to last.
