Digital camera reviews of Logitech Harmony 880 Advanced Universal Remote Control

Digital camera Review: 90 percent there
Summary: 4 Stars

After some setup headaches, I'm pretty happy with this product. The only problem I couldn't fix completely is that the remote does not dependably change the input source on my TV (a Philips 42PF997/37). I think this is primarily due to the fact that the TV's remote doesn't have dedicated buttons for the various input sources...you use the channel button to scroll through the sources. I worked around this, though, by creating a user-defined soft button for every activity (e.g. "Watch Live TV," "Watch DVD," etc.) to switch sources. If the TV doesn't switch inputs correctly when a new activity is selected, the soft buttons makes it pretty easy to get to the correct source quickly.

Other than that, the 880 is great. Replaces four remotes and controls the Motorola PVR from our cable provider with no problems. (Note: you may need to set up some soft buttons to emulate special purpose buttons on your PVR remote...no big deal.)

Digital camera Review: :ogitech Harmony 880 - Good as it gets!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have tried hundred of remotes but found them all lacking to some extent. However the Harmony 880 is the best ever. Simply, it does what it claims to do - simply and efficiently. The basic programming was easy. When I tried to do something tricky, I had the excellent support of a women from Logitech called Natashia (she the greatest).

Some reviews criticize the charging cradle. I don't get it. The unit easily connects to the cradle and charges efficiently.

I liked the unit so much, I recommended it to a close friend and he loves it as well (and we still have our friendship). Walt

Digital camera Review: A "True" Universal Remote
Summary: 5 Stars

Whether you're an audio/videophile or are just starting to build your system, this thing is just wonderful. It's a breeze to program using the website. Just input your equipment make/model numbers, and press a button on the website. You're done. The only remote that would be better than this would be a custom built one.
An additional bonus for this model is that my wife loves the way she can customize the background wallpaper and she can load slide shows for when it's sitting in it's charger.

Digital camera Review: A Great Remote
Summary: 4 Stars

A lot of the reviews for this product are based on old information. I just got this remote and have none of the common issues I read about before purchasing it.

It sits very snugly in its charging cradle. I have a standard household plug in the back seat of my van. I plugged in the charging base and placed it on my jacket (leather seats are slippery) and drove the 20 winding, hilly miles home. Not once did the remote lose contact in the charger. If it would have there is an audible tone so I would know immediately. Some claim walking by or bumping the table the charger sits on will break the contact. If it was once true this has been fixed.

The new software version (7.4) is very user friendly. Adding devices is as simple as typing in the maker and model number. This works even if the model number isn't on the drop-down list provided. I have an ancient TV in my bedroom that is so old the labels on the buttons wore off long ago. I entered the info and it found remote codes to work.
Customizing is as simple or detailed as you want it to be. After adding devices I could have stopped and this would still be a great remote. I decided to try linking devices to activities and even customizing additional buttons. You have to option to change any button you want, but I found the additional button feature much more useful.

When a device is first added all features of the remote become available, even if your device doesn't support it. By going into the additional buttons screen you can remove any redundant buttons as well as moving buttons you use most to the top. Some of my devices had up to 8 pages of buttons. When I was done, only the PS2 went over one page. The rest I would never use or were already on the remote somewhere else, such as the volume, channel, and chapter functions. All this can be done without the remote connected to your computer. Only when you choose to update the remote will you be asked to connect it.

If you are thinking about a universal remote to control all of your devices this one should be on the list. Even if you never use all of the available features it is still a bargain for the price.
