Digital camera reviews of Logitech Harmony Xbox 360 Remote

Digital camera Review: (Mostly) Does What It Should
Summary: 4 Stars

First off, let me start by saying that this IS a good remote. It helped me eliminate several of my other remotes, and although I just got it I am already seeing how useful it is to only have one remote on the coffee table. However, this thing isn't all peaches and cream...

My major problem is that it doesn't fully control all my devices. I mean, it found them all in the online database and was mostly successful in setting everything up on its own, but it doesn't especially like my Samsung HT-X50 home theater in a box. I have a Hitachi plasma and a Comcast DVR (Motorola DCT-3416) and it works fine with those just as it does with the XBox 360, but for some reason it just can't wrap its fictional head around my Samsung AV Receiver/DVD Player. I run all my audio through this receiver, and can also watch upscaled DVDs via a HDMI input. When I switch to DVD playback mode, it switches the TV and the audio over just fine, but when I try to switch over to something else it fails to correctly set up the audio input. Here's the breakdown:

DVR to Xbox - Fine (all audio/video inputs where they should be)
Xbox to DVR - Fine
Xbox to DVD - Fine
DVR to DVD - Fine
DVD to anything else - Incorrectly switches the audio input (if it even switches it to anything else at all - more often than not it just stays on the DVD audio even after the TV input has changed).

Granted, it's not exactly a HUGE thing, but for a remote that has so much potential and promises to work perfectly with everything, it's a little bit of a disappointment. Maybe after I call tech support and play around with it a little more I'll figure out a way to get it to reliably set up the audio when switching away from DVD playback, but until then it's keeping this remote from 5 stars.

Also, you will need to know that this remote does require a whole lot of tweaking, so expect to spend several hours initially setting it up and making sure it does everything, and the next couple of weeks constantly taking it back to your computer with the original remotes to have it learn obscure functions that you never realized you would miss until you no longer have them. You'll also spend a lot of time changing things around until they're to your liking, which thankfully the Harmony remote is excellent at, and I found that the only device that it set up without needing any adjustments was my TV. My Comcast DVR needed to have a few buttons "re-learned" because the online database wasn't perfectly correct with the signals it programmed into the remote during the initial setup, so be prepared for that as well.

All in all, though, this is a great remote and after spending a lot of time getting it set up to your liking, you'll really appreciate all that you're able to do with it. Even if you have to press a couple of extra buttons here and there, you'd probably end up pushing the same number of buttons if you were shuffling around remotes trying to get everything changed over correctly. If you have a lot of remotes and are looking to simplify your life, you could do much worse than this remote. However, if you have the extra coin to drop, I would say that you should go for the higher end Harmony models that I'm sure will treat you better (and can still be programmed to control the Xbox 360 with a little bit of ingenuity).
