Digital camera reviews of Logitech MX 518 High Performance Optical Gaming Mouse (Metal)Digital camera Review: A Great Mid-Range Gaming Mouse Summary: 5 Stars
This is my second Logitech MX518 mouse purchase since it was introduced. Prior to that I owned a MX510. I simply wore out the first two. The optical light (laser?) failed on my previous MX518 after a very long period of fast-paced, hardcore FPS gaming as well as doing some CG work and general use. I find a pressure sensitive graphics tablet such as WACOM's better suited for more precise graphics work, but for general use the MX518 works well. I love having the ability to quickly adjust the mouse's precision on-the-fly as well as several other functions using the on-board buttons rather than having to stop and adjust them through a program. Just set the functions wanted in the initial setup and off you go. The mouse buttons can also be set up for some game specific control functions.
My primary complaint about my first two Logitech MX500 series mice was their tiny, bottom glide pads. They had a tendency to shift or come loose after awhile. They could easily be lost or were difficult to reattach because of their tiny footprint. Often a single drop of super glue was too much and would squeeze out around the sides and cause problems if not cleaned before it set up -- very tedious. Logitech did not offer replacement pads. Finally found some third-party replacements (steelseries brand) through Amazon.com that worked fine. The latest incarnation of the MX518 appears to have remedied this problem by using much larger glide pads. The newest version works as expected and satisfies my varied needs. Only time and use will determine its longevity, but if it is anything like my previous one, it is well worth the money spent.
Therefore, I can easily recommend Logitech's MX518 Optical Mouse to those seeking a mid-range, mid-priced mouse both for gaming and for other uses requiring more precise cursor control. For the buck$, it certainly beats Microsoft, HP and most other comparable mice that I have tried within those mid-ranges. I cannot compare it to higher priced ones simply because I either have not tried or cannot afford them. Their is simply no comparison to the cheaper or old ball type mice.
Digital camera Review: A Great Mouse with Cool Design Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased Logitech MX518 because my old optical mouse is dead. I am not a gamer, but looking at the various reviews for this product, I am tempted to try this mouse out. (Plus, the price is not too bad at all)
The overall feel of this mouse is great and it's just about the right weight for an average user. The extra and thumb buttons are positioned well that I never accidentally clicked them. You can also change the sensitivity of the mouse, which is a plus.
Installation of the mouse is easy and as soon as I got the mouse, I followed the instructions on the package, plugged in the USB, and the mouse worked like a charm. the cord is not flimsy and it's long enough for all use in my opinion. I kind of like the "metallic" design too.
Overall, this mouse is very good even for those who don't really play games.
Digital camera Review: A Mouse for Every Gamer Summary: 5 Stars
I didn't really need a new mouse, but I wanted to promote my mouse to a more gaming feel. At the time of purchase, there was a $15 rebate available from Logitech for this item, so for about $25, it seemed like this was the time to upgrade.
I did a fair bit of research into gaming mouse products, and resisted my urge to go with something flashy. I am very happy with my MX518, and though it requires software to switch between sensitivity settings, it's only the slightest inconvenience to take full advantage of this mouse's capabilities. The mouse is slightly tapered to the right (sorry lefties, but this will present a MAJOR issue for you!), so that it fits surprisingly comfortably in the had, with a cutout for the thumb that gives great control. I don't use the extra top buttons too much, but the two on the left side of the mouse are very accessible and easy to get used to. All in all, this gives you quick access to a total of four buttons compared to the normal two.
All and all, it's a very solid investment, especially if you can get a good deal on it under $30 (as most USB mouses run for $15-20 anyway, you might as well invest in this). High end gamers of the FPS genre will get an edge out of this, as well as the casual gamers because of the short learning curve. Outside of gaming, the buttons can be used to perform complex keystrokes. If you've been looking for a new mouse, look no further.
Digital camera Review: A Real Gaming Mouse Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great gaming mouse. If customizable wieght and even higher dpi is really necessary, then go for the g5. I used the g5 for a few weeks and decided 2000 dpi was too much since I wasn't even using it at that at that high sensetivity, I also found the wieght system annoying becuase I kept thinking that I might need to change the wieght when ever I died. The mx518 was exactly what I needed. I love this but rarely use the on the fly sensitivity change feature while playing games, more for picture editing. My favorite feature is the left and right clicker on the side of the mouse which is fully customizable. I uses it in firefox to switch tabs in a second with ctrl+pgup and ctrl+pgdn! then I binded the window switcher to close the tab too (ctrl+w). Surfing the web is 10 times faster now. The g5 did allow you to have multiple programs know different commands without changing it on the mouse, sadly I wasn't able to do this on the mx518 :(. But when I really need to change it, it just takes a second. Also, you don't have to install any software to still be able to use the auto sensitivity switcher, but not any other shortcuts on the mouse, if you need to free up processes running the in background. Overall, it's an excellent mouse worth the price.
Digital camera Review: A dead skin and sweat magnet Summary: 4 Stars
I've used one of these mice for years now and it is one of the best I've ever owned with the exception of the original MX500. However, long term use has shown some weak points in design.
For starters, the glossy surface may seem nice but its a dead skin and sweat magnet. Literally you want to remove the glossy and swap it with a more textured feel. This problem is also visible on the sides where you rest your thumb under the side buttons. I used an MX500 for years before this and never had this happen. But overtime the 518 has the rubber coating rubbed away where the thumb rests leaving a smooth spot.
The mechanical parts function as good as it's predecessor. But I have had to repair the scroll wheel once during this time. The problem was hair winding around the mechanism. How it got in there, dunno. The rest of the buttons have been wonderful. Being able to speed up or slow down on the fly is useful. However, most of the time you'll have your mouse set to medium.
Overall, I'd buy one again, but it would be much better if Logitech made a MX518 with the MX500's case. Glossy is just not that great during the hot months.
