Digital camera reviews of Logitech MX 518 High Performance Optical Gaming Mouse (Metal)Digital camera Review: A quality mouse with a key issue involving gaming in Windows Summary: 4 Stars
The MX518 is a very good mouse with smooth precision and speed. It feels real nice to the touch and the side buttons are no trouble to access. You can control the dpi setting once you have installed it's software, it can climb as high as 1600 dpi. You are given a great deal of control over your ability to implement it's button layout, speed, and pointer precision into most any application. I do have one major concern that I must warn all about before you purchase this particular mouse. It has issues with video games running on Windows Vista (go figure right). Well the problem is the programmable side buttons and the scroll wheel don't exactly work the way they should depending on the PC title. And this is AFTER installing all of it's current drivers. In Diablo 2, the mouse scroll wheel acts like it don't even exist... you can't even assign a keystroke command to the blasted thing! In Morrowind, it's the side buttons that won't work though the scroll wheel will! Those are just examples. But for gamers, this is a problem. You figure to buy a mouse like this for it's response and programmable buttons, but they just don't work like they should in Vista. As I recall, I had no such problems on Windows XP, so if your on XP your good to go. As far as the basics are concerned on Vista (like browsing the net) the MX518 works like a charm, and all of it's buttons in this case work like they should. So if your into gaming, are looking into the MX518, have the Vista OS, BEWARE!!! Do yourself the favor of making sure the product has the "Vista ready" logo on the package.
UPDATE:
.... It appears that after several months the MX518's kinks in most applications have been resolved for the most part. I installed my drivers directly through Logitechs' official website. I did not install them through their pack in cd. I don't know if using the cd will recreate the same issues now in video games on Vista, as it did several months ago. I can however confirm that going through the website seems to have finally paid off for me. Vista is finally getting some things on track it seems...
Digital camera Review: A tour de force of gaming worksmanship Summary: 5 Stars
This is, by far, the best mouse I have ever owned. I used Microsoft for the longest time before I used this, and let me say that I will never again stray from Logitech for mice. This "budget" gaming mouse will outplay and outperform many of the flagships out there, even ones that are purportedly more sensitive (like Laser mice). In independent benchmarking, the MX-518 was identified as one of the best mice in terms of tracking speed, tracking fidelity, and smoothness of control, basically never skipping a beat at any (reasonable) surface movement speed.
From my own experience, I can say that this thing tracks and handles like a dream. It never jitters and never lags. While the resolution adjustment buttons may seem superfluous to some, let me say that I thought the same thing, but now I don't want to touch a mice without them. You can change on the fly to suit your situation, or if a friend comes, he can change it to suit his own liking.
The ergonomics are also great. This form is tried and true, and graces most Logitech mice. It's basically identical in shape to a G5. The mouse is comfortable, a good size, and is easy to grip for both palm and claw graspers. It has a smooth lip around the top that allows fantastic grip, and the lip also prevents you from accidentally hitting the side buttons.
The buttons are crisp and responsive, and the mouse wheel is very well-designed. The scrolling is both smooth and sturdy, allowing you to select weapons accurately. The resistance on the mouse wheel (as a button) is flawless.
The weight of the mouse is a matter of preference. It might be too light for some, and it's not adjustable like the G5/7/9. One thing is for sure, though--you won't be displeased about how it moves across your mousepad. The friction pads on the bottom are excellent, and the mouse glides effortlessly over almost all surfaces. Also, unlike friction feet, they don't get gunky or fall off.
The mouse has a few drawbacks. The cord is a bit thick, and it can sometimes get stuck or push awkwardly against things, slowing your movement. The third button on top, which is designed like an ALT-TAB menu, is dangerous. I disabled it, because it can take you out of full-screen applications.
The side buttons are a bit too sensitive for my liking, though you are unlikely to hit them because of the aforementioned lip. Also, the scroll wheel does not have side tilt, but some might consider side tilt to be a distraction.
If you're okay with wireless mice, and you don't mind a relatively light mouse that doesn't have adjustable weight, this is a stellar choice. It's even good for non-gamers. I use the adjustable DPI when I'm using Photoshop, as well.
Digital camera Review: AMAZON SUCKS....Another year of Christmas shopping screwed up Summary: 1 Stars
Amazon has screwed up my orders on several occasions. so I'm not sure why I even THOUGHT they could deliver a gaming mouse that my nephew wanted, except that I orderd early - on Dec 8th, and they said it would be delivered Dec 13th. OH BUT WAIT, on Dec 20th when it still hadn't arrived, they said SORRY WE UPDATED THE DELIVERY TIME to Dec 22nd-24th, OH AND HEY, SORRY WE DIDN'T BOTHER TO EMAIL YOU so you might be able to purchase from someone else (because that would cut into our profit and we don't really care about customer service). So, I had to go out and buy a gaming mouse locally, ship it express mail so it would arrive a few days AFTER CHRISTMAS. GOOD JOB AMAZON, can always count on you during the holidays. My New Year's Resolution for 2007, DONT BE A CHUMP, AMAZON SUCKS and THERE ARE PLENTY OF OTHER OPTIONS. Did I mention I had to ship theirs back and still haven't seen the credit.... soooo convenient!!
Digital camera Review: Absolute perfection Summary: 5 Stars
This mouse is amazing. It looks great, feels great, it's incredibly precise, and the adjustable sensitivity makes it perfect for any situation in any game, along with doing artwork or anything else. If you're wondering whether or not you should buy this mouse, stop now. Just buy it.
Digital camera Review: All the buttons doesn't work Summary: 2 Stars
Update to review. After updating the driver for a plug-in application called SteerMouse, this mouse works just fine.
Former review: All the buttons won't work with my Mac Pro. The side buttons, the right and left and scroll wheel work just fine. But the three other smaller buttons simply will not work.
