Digital camera reviews of Logitech Squeezebox Wi-Fi Internet Radio and Wireless Music PlayerDigital camera Review: Great product Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the best gadgets I have seen in a long time. It was simple to set up, the sound quality is excellent, and operation is easy. This thing makes your whole electronic music library accessible in a flash, but it also opens up a world of streaming internet radio stations.
Digital camera Review: Great product! Easy to set up! RECOMMENDED! Summary: 5 Stars
I wanted something I could use to listen to my extensive mp3 music collection, but I found a Media Center PC or similar to be too much trouble. Enter the Squeezebox. This device made listening to music hosted on a computer in another part of the house a breeze, the audio quality is as good as the mp3 file that's playing, and setup and use is EASY!
I am hosting the SqueezeCenter server software on a Windows Server 2008 machine, and the only problem I've found is that I must start the service manually each time I reboot. (Luckily this is only once every 3 months or so.)
I would definitely recommend this product to anyone with a large mp3 collection and a wireless network. The price is a little excessive, but after months of use I've forgotten about the money and can't stop thinking about how much I love this product.
Digital camera Review: I love it! Summary: 5 Stars
This is the product I have been longing for. No problems, easy to set up. Combined with a plugin to connect it to last.fm, it is all I need.
Digital camera Review: Ideal CD player replacement. Summary: 5 Stars
The Squeezebox is like the Tivo in the sense that it is a bit hard to explain what it does, but like the Tivo, once you start to use it, you don't know how you lived without it.
When my 5-disk CD player died, I surfed the web for alternatives. I have a fairly extensive CD collection and my interests include classical music, classic jazz, and modern recordings of Broadway shows that are done with real orchestras (larger the better). I also have a passion for modern recordings of operettas. I found that reviews of the the Squeezebox rated it quite highly, and commented on the exceptional quality of the digital-to-analog converter (something I had never really thought about). I finally chose the classic model and have had it for several months now. At least in the Linux world, there are a number of programs for ripping CDs directly to flac files (probably the most obvious lossless choice of file format), and with terabyte drives under $100, storage space is not a problem. I still buy CDs, (something you are forced to do with my kind of tastes), but I immediately rip the CDs to flac, and never actually play the physical CD disk. No more fiddling with disks and jewel boxes.
The Squeezebox is the first product I have run into with the Logitech logo that is Linux friendly (and I mean really, really friendly). It was a breeze to setup, and very easy to use. And kudos for the person or persons that designed the web interface. It is very intuitive and is all one could ask for. The classic version of the Squeezebox has a remote control, but I mainly use the web GUI.
The bottom line is that the quality of sound is significantly better than any CD or DVD player I have used. Even though much of my collection consists of modern, digital recordings, quality differences between recordings are much more apparent when using the Squeezebox. And recordings that I have listened to many times using a CD player, have a fresh new sound to them. I could not be happier with my choice of the Squeezebox.
Digital camera Review: If you have problems blame your network or your computer Summary: 5 Stars
This product is great. Other people gave detailed descriptions so here are the things that were important to me (2 years ago when I got it).
1) It plays flac which is hard to find, but it also plays other formates
2) It has a very nice opensource software (slimserver) that lets you avoid all the problems with tagging your files by letting you browes your music by folders - the way your music is organized on a hard drive (again, hard to find option). Other devices like roku now work with slimserver, but not nearly as smoothly as squeezbox (I had chance to use roku and it simply is not good enough if you listen music a lot)
3) Digital out (essential and not so hard to find)
4) Design which is simply great
Now about problems people describe:
Most problems people describe are probably because of the network and/or their computers. The problems are inevitable with other network players. It doesn't seem right to blame squeezbox for problems that have nothing to do with it. Yes, when for whatever reason my server gets assigned new IP address on my home network i have to correct that on the squeezbox. But I don't blame the squeezbox for that. So, if you want a network player ,with all the problems associated with one, and you are not willing to pay >$800, then this is the one to buy.
