I just installed the Logitech VX Nano Cordless Laser Mouse in my notebook computer. The mouse requires two AAA batteries (included) and there is a SetPoint 4.0 CD Installation Disk which you must use if you want to take advantage of the mouse's special features. You need a modicum of technical skills to install the software, which takes approximately ten minutes. The mouse has a very small USB receiver that you insert in your USB port. The receiver may be tucked into a hidden storage compartment when not in use. A cloth pouch is also included to keep your mouse clean when you are on the road.
Logitech is a reputable company and, as expected, the mouse works smoothly. The scroll wheel toggles for quick mode (fast scrolling) or ratchet mode for precision scrolling. The instructions say that the mouse is supposed to scroll from side-to-side, but although I installed the software, so far this feature has not worked for me. In addition if you want to customize the button settings, you can re-assign button tasks.
A special feature is a button that takes you to the Internet to conduct a search. If the software is not installed, then this serves as an Auto-Scroll button. A LED light on the mouse flashes red when the batteries are getting low. There are also two buttons on the left hand side of the mouse which can take you back and forth on Internet pages. Finally, there is an on/off button on the underside of the mouse which you should use to save battery power when you are away from your computer. One minor irritation is that Logitech installs a Yahoo toolbar along with the software which I feel was unnecessary. If I wanted a Yahoo toolbar, I would install it myself.
I have used a variety of portable and cordless mice over the years, and so far, this versatile device seems to work very well. The mouse is small enough to fit nicely in your hand but functional enough to perform all necessary tasks quietly, quickly, and efficiently. Most notebook users would be quite pleased with the Logitech VX Nano mouse.
