Digital camera Review: 'Of Mice and Men'

I'm a Mac user so finding a good aftermarket mouse is more of a challenge than with a Windows system. Ironically, the company that invented mouse computing has the worst entries in the market. As some of you may know, Apple is about 75% form and 25% function.
Anyway, I started my quest a few years back with the vertical mouse from Evoluent (available on Amazon) and it served me well in terms of ergonomics. Unfortunately, the company never really took off. When I purchased my new MacPro 2009, it came with the standard Apple Mouse with that tiny scroll wheel (button) that easily becomes soiled with oils and has to be cleaned fairly often.
So I started with the Logitech M510 & M705 but the ergonomics wasn't that great so I returned them. I then jumped to the Razer's Mamba mouse, complete with every horn and whistle imaginable. This is a fantastic mouse and it comes packaged similar to a $8k Leica camera. Unfortunately, half of the features don't work on the Mac as advertised, so back it went.
Ultimately, I picked up the Logitech Performance MX and hit pay dirt! Despite the somewhat colored reviews, I find the MX to be the best mouse I have ever used. The smooth scroll selection is among my favorite features. Initially, I didn't like it as I switched between conventional detent scrolling and freewheeling. Over time, I was able to adapt and spin the wheel with predictable results. Now I simply can't live without it! The thumb-down button conveniently activates your assigned action with grace. The `forward' and `back' buttons don't really work for me but every other feature works great! The battery charge lasted a full month before it needed recharge and the USB key works perfect with no mouse action hesitation. The supplied USB charging/extension cord(s) are generously long, and the overall build is also well above average.
Summary: Finding the right mouse for your particular hand is highly subjective, so I recommend you look into retailers with a generous return policy. Once you find that perfect fit, then come back to Amazon for price shopping. After testing four mice back-to-back, I'm confident with recommending the Logitech Performance MX mouse for both Mac OSX and Windows.
