Digital camera reviews of Logitech Z-5500 THX-Certified 5.1 Digital Surround Sound Speaker SystemDigital camera Review: "Big Sound!" Summary: 5 Stars
My title is pretty direct. The sound is ENORMOUS that is produced out of these. For a fairly cheap 5.1 system it plays back sound quality that is top notch. The bass can produce immense volume, the satellites offer great tone and sound quality, the center gives good feedback as well. However I've not gotten to run this through it's full paces in true 5.1 yet to give an accurate description. So I will simply describe it in simplest terms first, and later update this.
I used the movie "Saving Private Ryan" and "War of the Worlds" to test and bench mark against my old logitech 2.1 system. Let me say that with the bass alone my old speaker system was drowned out completely by the opening sequence of "Saving Private Ryans" beach landing. The sound of bullets and the shock of mortars really pumped out of the 10 inch sub.
The Rears and fronts gave good quality for spoken dialogue and the higher frequencies of bullets and gun fire came through excellent. All in all the only one speaker of this set I've not yet gotten good feeback from is the center, again due to my lack of proper set up for the true 5.1, pesky sound card! My 2.1 couldn't hope to keep up with this system. Although a good system, the sub alone is about the size of 3 of my old.
For "War of the Worlds" the trumpeting of the alien ships was immense. The sound of building being destroyed and beams vaporizing civilians came through excellent! Leaving a very cinematic feel. I was impressed overall by the fidelity of which this produces sound. Given again, that it is not a top of the line home theater system, but for computer system it really is awesome.
For my brief intro, I will say this already is worth every penny I spent and I would recommend these a thousand times over. Once I do some upgrades to my PC to offer better sound processing I'll revisit this for a fuller review.
Digital camera Review: "Hello, 911? I just heard a bunch of explosions!" Summary: 4 Stars
Been listening to these for the past week and wowzers, they are nice. The clarity is unreal and the power is scary. Been gaming with them and I'm affraid some one is going to call the police with all the gun shots and explosions going on in my computer room, well not really but you know what I mean. This thing shakes walls and rattles windows. I got the sub-woofer down to near minimum and that's plenty for me. But its nice to know that if my upstairs neighbor decides to play their crappy music too loud that I can blow them away easily. >=)
The first thing that struck me was the sub-woofer..Good lord it's HUGE! It's more like a canon than a speaker. As a reminder, keep it at least 2 feet away from your PC or other sensitive electronic devices. You don't get the warning until you open the box and if you plopped it down next to your PC before reading the warning...Well a freshly re-built system is always nice.
What's weird is that I'm trying to adjust to sound fullness versus loudness. I don't have it up very loud, but the sound is so rich that it sounds allot louder than what it really is. I don't know if that makes sense but it's just another indicator of quality.
Now I did notice a very faint crackle at a certain frequency but that seems to have occurred with only one CD in a certain drive. WAV (game) output is flawless and the other CD drive played fine. So I'm not so quick to say its the speakers, they just reproduce what they are fed for the most part. And with an old Audigy X-Gamer sound card and old CD drive...Allot can happen to cause this, but I'm just picking nits at this point.
The pros:
1. Big BIG sound
2. You don't just hear explosions, you feel them. And if you're a retarded attention whore and like to ruin music with ridiculous bass volume, you'll love them.
3. Great sound customization
4. The remote
The Cons:
1. Expensive
2. The stands on the speakers are kind of lame and not too adjustable.
3. Having to go out and buy two speaker stands for the rear channels so as to better focus sound than rely on the mounts/stands.
4. If you live in an aprtment, restraining your self from cranking it up so as to be a good neighbor.
5. Shipping costs
Digital camera Review: 2 weeks with the Logitech Z-5500 ..... Summary: 4 Stars
I, like alot of people, eagerly awaited my arrival of this system. I am quite pleased with the system, but there are a few things I am not fond of.
PROS: VERY LOUD, very good to use as a home theatre system, the control box is very easy to use and the rotary knob is very precise. The subwoofer is HUGE and will shake the room, or in my case, the entire dormitory. Speaker quality is very clear, even when pushed to the limits. The price was astonishing for 1000 watts of power, although, I did not order it from Amazon.
CONS: The subwoofer is huge, thus it does not play rock music very well, as it has no 'kick'. It does play rap, hip hop, or anything where the bass drops ASTONISHINGLY, but this doesnt help me too much. At low volumes, you can hear the sub, but it is not very defined because its so big that it needs alot more power to get it working in its efficiency range. Also, I was wishing that there was a seperate 'subwoofer volume' and 'main volume'. There is a subwoofer control, but that only works like a bass control, playing the bass deeper, but not necessarily louder. In order to get the loud bass, the main speakers also get quite loud, but at the parties we have here, bass is what gets people moving, not high-frequencies.
VERDICT: Although I am still pleased with the system, I do not think that it rivals Kiplisch Ultra line of speakers. My roommate has Kiplisch Ultra 2.1's, and although my sound quality is better, and louder, his subwoofer makes up for the difference, easily playing all kinds of music with no need to change equalizers, and his also has 2 seperate volume controls for main speakers and subwoofer. Its little extras like that that make the difference. It is a great system, but if you are a music lover, this might not be the best system, however for an all around system, pricewise, it is a good deal.
Digital camera Review: 3 Years Old and Still Sound Great Summary: 5 Stars
If you are looking for a higher-end speaker system for your computer, I recommend this system. It sounds great for gaming, video, and listening to music.
Digital camera Review: 4 years in, still works great Summary: 5 Stars
I'm writing mainly on the reliability of this speaker set.
I bought this model from Logitech's site 4 years ago. I have used it almost everyday since then and and it still works great. It doesn't surprise me that they are still selling such a good product, though.
The sound quality has been fantastic throughout my ownership, good midrange and high notes balanced out by the powerful base. It is great for gaming and movies, especially if your computer has a good sound capabilities built in.
My complaints are minor, there is a paucity of inputs (only 3) and the speaker cables require creative methods of hiding.
