Everyone has already said what I would have said about this absolutely awesome system so I'm just here to add my encouragement for those thinking about buying a new 5.1 system for their computer or as a home theater.
I've been a career touring musician for over 30 years and am a sound recordist for film and TV by trade. So I guess you can say I know sound and love music. Movies are what I do and the sound to me is as important as the image.
My old speakers were on their last electrons so I started intensive research on what was the best system for the money to get to replace the system I use on my computer. Everywhere I read pointed to this system. It has won awards on various technology websites and always is picked as the either the best system, or the best system for the cost. I still continued to read and there seemed to be nothing else that had everything going for it.
Still, just ordering a sound system, site unheard, for ME, was a pretty risky venture. I actually should have gone to a brick and mortar store and had a listen but I was in a hurry and went ahead and just did it.
Was it the right thing to do? Absolutely! I've since listened to systems at twice the price and they don't even come close. This is one killer system and I now see why it's garnered the praise and awards it has. The bass response will wake your neighbors, yet it's clear and crisp. The flexibility of settings is great. The outputs are just right. I really can't find anything negative to write about, except that the cable to the main controller could be longer.
AND, it's just plain classy looking!
So that's about all I can add to all the other praise and accolades. If you need to hear it, find it in a store, crank it up and put the Z-5500 through it's paces. Then come back to Amazon for the better price!

These sound perfect in my living room 13' x 18'. I wanted to keep my room as clean as possible and these do the trick. The main reason I am writing this is to clarify that as of 10-13-07 the set that I received had regular spring clip speaker connections not RCA plugs. Which in my opinion is a very good thing (I was told by logitech support that it was the rca plugs). The set came with 3-15' cables and 2-25' cables. Which in most cases is probably enough but I needed more to run through the attic so installing my own was easy with these terminals.
I am running my X-BOX 360 and DVR cable box through an optical splitter into the optical input on the control pod and works just wonderfully. My DVD/VCR combo is ran through the Digital COAX input. I also just figured out that my X-Box is a media extender so I can play all of my music and videos from my computer in my living room.
The speaker stands work fine for wall mounting but I installed my satelites hanging from the ceiling and the stands flex a little. This is not due to poor quality just that it isn't what they are made for.
Overall this is exactly what I expected, Good quality, great sound, and superior selection of inputs. Could't be happier.

I have this set of speakers for 6 months. It's really powerful and perfect.
It has several input jacks. I've been using it with a DVD player through a coaxial cable and also with my laptop through its prepared links. The subwoofer is really huge and powerful. I love it so much. Buy and enjoy!!

I have owned the Z-5500's for over a year now and have not experienced a single problem with the speakers. I had to read through the 1 and 2 star reviews to get a feel for what people thought were valid complaints.
For the peolpe who experienced a problem under warranty then complained because they wouldn't have sound for 2 weeks while the repair was in progress- you rated these speakers 1 or 2 stars, if they are that bad you should just go purchase a cheesy set of speakers and leave these to the true audiophiles.
For the "Electrical Engineer"- I'm a master electrician. The popping you hear is an arc feedback in your electrical system. Replace your mercury or snap switches with quiet switches or get an APC UPS... you really should have decent power protection on all your equipment anyway. Also take advantage of a device called a "Graphic Equalizer". This modern marvel will let you fully adjust all ranges of the audio and your lows will no longer be too low. Jeez! Some "Electical Engineer".
Others complained about failures outside the warranty period. Nothing lasts forever, but does that mean they were crappy speakers while they worked? If you paid $300 and they lasted more than 1 year, you paid less than $1 a day for awesome sound.... and how much did you spend for a coffee at Starbucks every day? I'd rather have the Z-5500's than a Grande!
Sweet sound, shake the pictures off the walls when i want them to, over 1 year and not a single glitch.... get 'em at this really low price! You won't be sorry!!!
