Digital camera reviews of Logitech Z-5500 THX-Certified 5.1 Digital Surround Sound Speaker System

Digital camera Review: A complete and solid sound speaker system
Summary: 5 Stars

Control Unit: The control unit is much larger than I had anticipated standing wider and taller than the speakers that this system comes with, but this makes for better handling hands on for volume and settings. Easy to push buttons toggle the display for sound options and control knob turns easily with small resistant increments. The remote controls the device 100% if the control unit is placed at a distance.

Satellite Speakers: The satellite speakers have a heavy feel to them weighing in at 4.5, 5 pounds each. The plastic feet are molded into a sturdy shape, however the plastic itself is of cheap quality. The feet swivel so they can be set down on a flat surface or hung from a vertical back or front walls. Hanging them upside down from a ceiling or rafters will not work properly as the feet are in a "U" shape putting to much stress on the mounting holes and cheap plastic.

Subwoofer: The sub is VERY BIG. 16 1/4" x 13". This does not include the added length of 1 1/2" on the back for the heatsink. The bump coming off a few of my songs rattled loose some florence lights I had in storage on the other side of the house! The ports on the back include all the speaker wire connections, a power switch and a VGA connection for the control unit.

Sound encoding support includes THX, Dolby Digital pro logic II and dts 96/24. The sound is clean. The bass is precise and the surround is amazing. I strongly recommend pairing this whole speaker set with a high quality soundcard for added sound management, surround for games, and cinema for movies. I personally use the Creative X-Fi Titanium Pro that uses all the encoding the control center supports. It would almost seem like this speaker system and card were made for each other.

One conflict I have encountered with the high quality soundcards working with this system is some functions can be redundant. I have surround controls on the card and also the control unit. These functions and others similar to these; subwoofer, surround, center, rear, can fight each other for control. If less is more in your world, skip the soundcard. This speaker system will stand out on its own.

Digital camera Review: A good multiple use speaker kit
Summary: 5 Stars

Previously used Z-5450 wireless THX speakers. That set saves 2 wires for rear speakers and the sound is actually very good. But... what you paid for is your wireless network. Sadly, mine is a 802.11G, same freq range as 5450. My Netgear Mimo router, print server, even my phone all got problems. So much interference from Z-5450.
Finally I buried 5450 to garage and bought Z-5500. Have owned it for more than a month. My wireless network now is working without problem. 5500 has a better sound than 5450. The mid and high are very clear. Bass is not very deep but is quite enough for me (sometimes little too much). I use Z-5500 to watch DVD from computer and listen to soft music and classic music. My stereophile speakers are Dinaudio Contour 1.8. Price difference between the 1.8 and 5500 is huge but sound is not that far different. Use 5500 to play string instrument music is really enjoyful.

Have tried Logitech G51 at local stores. It's not comparable to 5500 from remote control to sound effect. I would suggest to pay for the extra $100 to get a Z-5500.

Digital camera Review: A good simple system that will rock your walls down
Summary: 5 Stars

The only reason I bought this system is that there is a remote control that comes with it and that is was rather compact. But when I watched Stargate I was amazed (the part where UFO lands on the pyramid) the clock on the wall fell by the force of vibration produced by the sub. Gaming experience I now epic I really feel like I m in the game. It is a very powerful system for it's size!! The only problem I have with it is sometimes It just decides to turn off , but it only happened to me very few times.

Digital camera Review: A little expensive, but you get what you pay for
Summary: 5 Stars

Title says it all, a little expensive, but just handling the speakers is all you need to do to know you got quality in your hands. They are HEAVY. Cheap -n- crappy speakers always feel crap. And the sound quality on these it top notch, and they'll get louder than you'll EVER want to run them for any extended time, unless you plan to be deaf and have internal bleeding from the low frequencies this thing can pump out.

Never been a fan of Logitech speakers... till now.

Digital camera Review: A review? From me? What the?
Summary: 3 Stars

I have no prior reviewing experiences. Of anything. Yet, Amazon in their divine internet wisdom has emailed me to review this Logitech stuff I bought. Well, well, hold your empty goblets at the ready, for my review is about to spill forth. And I am wordy loon, so better make that a big gulp goblet.

I paid 244 buckaroos for this set up. So that has to be considered. Somehow. I am not sure how but maybe you can figure it out.

Lets see. It is exaclty what it says it is. It was easy to put together and start using. I would've liked slightly longer cords for the rear speakers so I could run them around the entire room and have people either trip on them or duck their heads from being garrotted, but, I can't have everything.

I managed to drop one speaker and the face plate thingy fell off. I almost cried. But it went right back on, no damage done. No tears wasted.

The highs are high. And there. You don't have to strain to hear them. I got no problems with the highs.

The lows are really there. Like the lows you don't notice until some other distracting sound is gone like a nagging loved one complaining about how much you spent on a set of speakers just to play games.

Also, if one was to turn up the bass, so as to say, test how loud they get, one could almost drown out the badgering of said person but not really. Maybe a jumbo jet could do that. But these things get loud enough that I feel very concerned about my neighbor who shares a common wall with me. So I don't turn it up past halfway much.

However, it lacks what I want to call 'punch'. Yeah yeah, it's loud and stuff and has a decent range from what I can tell with my neophyte experience with speakers. But, it just doesn't have that kick to it. It's almost all a nice low rumble or a deep rumble or whatever. Which might not be the basses problem it all. And have more to do with my next part of my wonderful review you have been enjoying so far. And remember, I am doing this review for free, and for the kids. So, don't hate me. Hate the review. Or uh, something like that.

Also, the bass box is large. I use it as a coffe table.

THe mid range is not there. There is no equalizer or settings to change the mid range. Maybe I am too picky but I expected to be blasted out of my chair at full volume. Instead, I just had my ears hurt a little and I think my hearts rythmn reset. But no just rolling on the floor screaming and ducking for cover from the sounds of battle.

I believe this might happen to be because only the center speaker is doing the mid range? I have no idea. I just thought I noticed that when the center speaker is not being over powered by the rears and stuff, that the mid range starts to show up better. But is still way too quiet.

It worked with everything I plugged into it. My computer, my craptastic Zen player, my xbox360, and my aging vcr.

I haven't used the remote, NAY, I haven't even put the batteries in it. So, I will not comment on this other than to say it exists.

I do have another issue at hand with this fearsome foe. The lack of fine tuning. I wish it had some simple equalizer or some such.

The rest of my disappointments lie with me not having any idea what 5.1 was used with and where and when or how. When I watch a movie in 5.1, the rear speakers rarely seem to be used. So, maybe I got it set up wrong. Somdeay I will figure out all this tech stuff or not.

Anyway, for 244 bucks I expect quality, or well, whatever. I don't care anymore. I have games to play.

bahbaye.
