Digital camera reviews of Lowepro CompuRover AW Camera Bag (Black)Digital camera Review: Awesome Bag - one minor issue Summary: 4 Stars
We owned the predecessor to this bag and loved it. When I found out that they now had one with a built in laptop compartment I was really excited to get one. In the past we had used the older version of this case as a carry-on for airline travel and getting the laptop in and out was terrible as it really was not built for that. This new case has the perfect compartment with easy access for the laptop. It kept all of the storage space of the old bag (which was a lot to start with). We use a digital SLR with two lenses and a large flash along with all of the remotes and gear that go with it(including a tripod). There is even a storage are on top of the camera section for stuff(lunches, light jackets, snacks, etc). We have no problem getting it all in the backpack. You can even store the camera with either lense attached and still close the case. The backpack protects everything well as we did have a person fall on it once and nothing was broken. The only drawback that we can find to this is the zippers that gives you access to the camera. They are very well constructed just like the old bag but because of where they are located they are somewhat difficult to move at times. We hope that as time goes by they will break in and work more freely. For a casual photographer with the same basic equipment we have you cannot go wrong.
Digital camera Review: But for a couple of things this would be 5 stars Summary: 4 Stars
In general, very pleased with the bag. Quite sturdy, straps are heavy duty and comfortable when carrying a lot of weight. The bag is somewhat short; and given I have a long torso, cinching up the waist belt would result in the belt riding well above my hips. Plenty of room for camera equipment; place for an SLR with medium zoom, external flash, 2nd medium zoom and accessories. I could probably fit a tele-photo zoom in as well, although I haven't tried it yet. Nice compartment for the laptop as well.
My gripes are that this is somewhat limited in using it as a combo business-laptop-camera bag. Other than the laptop area, there's no place to stash a spiral-bound notebook. Also, the upper compartment is pretty limited in size; fitting a couple of computer accessories (small graphics tablet and headset) along with noise canceling headphones, a paperback book (forget about hard-cover) and airline carry-on essentials pushes it to the limit.
Would I buy it again? Yes. Hence the 4 stars.
Digital camera Review: Compurover Review Summary: 4 Stars
This is a very well built backback. The camera equipment goes into the lower third of the pack and folds out to store the equipment in. It is a little awkward to get used to, but once you do it works fine. The space is decent for a Nikon D300 with a 17-55mm lens, a telephoto lens, a flash, and extra batteries, filters, cords, recharger etc. The top third of the pack is open. It is good for storing a book and toiletries, but not much else. You cannot pack a weekend's worth of clothing in it unless you bring less camera equipment. The outside back of the pack can store a tripod very nicely. I have a traveller tripod so it stores fairly small, with the ballhead included. I took the pack on a recent airline flight and it stowed quite nicely in the overhead compartment of a 737.
Digital camera Review: Consider the Computrekker or Vertex model instead Summary: 3 Stars
I was truly working for a bag that can keep my 17" Dell and 40D with battery pack, and several lenses during travels. It's my fault that I didnt bring along all my gears when I bought this from a local store.
Negative points:
1) When I place the camera in the middle slot and push the drawer/rover system, the plastic clip in the middle scrathes the LCD screen of my 40D.
2) Contrary to my initial expectation for the "rover" line, it's not easy to pick-up you camera from the bag to shoot a fleeting moment; I bought a Crumpler 6M USD Home just to supplement this purpose.
3) The slot of the 17" laptop is still cramped in the end. Although sufficiently foamed, space is not really slotted for a laptop.
4) 40D with battery pack seems to big already for the compartment.
5) 70-200 lens is already cramped as well.
6) In general, bag is too big to look at but surprisingly cannot accommodate much.
I think the -trekker system (gears placed in vertical array slots) is still better in the end. Consider the Computrekker AW (even not "plus," still can handle 17") or Vertex line if you want one bag for camera + laptop, or just buy a separate bag for laptop and separate for gear--something big like Phototrekker to provide for that 500mm lens that youre eyeing.
Digital camera Review: EXCELLENT Quality Bag! Summary: 5 Stars
We bought this for our son for Christmas. He wanted a high quality bag to carry his laptop and his digital SLR camera together at college. The bag arrived quickly and after opening and inspecting, we were very happy with the apparent high quality of the materials and the construction. It is large and roomy and had plenty of room left for carrying other things he needed without over crowding. Very pleased with this purchase!
